The Terror's out this year. The Old Guard isn't yet, but it will be by the time noms roll around.

Did they do away with the rule that everything's eligible in the year it appears? Lots of too-big fandoms used to creep in because it was new in that calendar year.

The ones I've seen always got in because they were small enough during nominations (or whatever the cutoff date is), but they exploded between then and December. Yuri on Ice is an example.

I'm not sure there ever was a rule like that. They used to have a dead fandoms rule, but that was ages ago. Too big fandoms usually squeeze through because they have 988 fics after filters are applied when they get approved, even though they're maybe two or three months old and it's obvious that's going to change.

It was a rule back in the pre-AO3 days, I believe. There was wank about astolat using it to get her American Idol pairing of the moment in, IIRC.

Yeah, I knew there was a rule but didn't know when they did away with it. I started with Yuletide back when it was in the original archive, but haven't paid attention to any rule changes since the fandoms I always request are ancient and I don't have to care. :P

I think the rule was removed a couple years ago, but I can't remember an exact year.

I did a double-take when I saw that, too. I've loved Captive Prince since reading it on LJ, and there have been some decent Yuletide fics... but it's way too big now.
