This is Yuletide, everybody make a scene

I am the sock with the tear-away face
Low-effort with your gift and gone without a trace
I am the "who" when you call, "Who does an exchange without acknowledging their gift?"
I am the wanker blowing through your fics comments
I am the coalie dragging your letter at night
Filling your exchange to the brim with fright!

This is Coaltide!

Whether or not you think it should count, that's what's used and has been for as long as ffnet has had it. If it's consistently applied, then who cares?

Halfway through the tagset there's already over 20 fandoms I want. whyyyyyy

Yeah, this surprised me too. Makes me want to replay.

Re: Tagset Canon Recs - incest

[M/M] An Uncomfortable Truth - webtoon about a younger adopted brother who's very yandere about his older brother. Psychological/school. Not exactly canon but the one-sided vibes are strong.

[M/F] Channel Zero: Dream Door - one season in a SyFy horror anthology. A woman discovers that she has the power to manifest a killer clown guardian. This is a spoiler, but there is canon one-sided incest feelings from an obsessive murder-y half-brother.

[M/M] Darren Shan series - MG novel series. This is kind of cheating and I'm not really sure if it counts, lol. A boy named Darren becomes a half-vampire and serves as a vampire's assistant. He gets embroiled in a war between vampires and vampaneze (evil!vampires). His best friend Steve is like typical shounen childhood friend turned evil grudge-bearing rival and there's definite ship potential. It turns out they're half-brothers "made" by the bad guy to be his pawns, though they're not aware of it til the end.

[M/M] Dominion (TV) - Syfy series about the world after an apocalypse in which humans are zombified into evil angels. Gabriel and Michael are two archangel brothers on opposite sides - Gabriel leads the angels, while Michael sides with the humans. Their dynamic is kind of like MCU Thor and Loki, but angels. Lots of angsty "stop fighting me, brother!!" back and forth, and they share a mindbond.

[F/F] Sharp Objects (TV) - psychological thriller HBO series adopting the novel by Gillian Flynn. A journalist returns to her hometown to write about murders that took place there. There is dark half-sister incest vibes that isn't quite canon but close enough, though heads-up that the younger is high school aged if underage isn't your thing.

And I noticed that someone nommed 上瘾 | Addicted | Heroin (Web Series), though with no characters? It's a BL high school webseries with a stepbrother couple.

Welcome to “why we sock up”.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Impressively, I've only picked up one extra to request (taking my requests to 4), but the list of things I can write/am prepared to write/want to write is, uh, going to need some pruning!

I had a bunch of really nice surprises, including a couple fandoms that I had been the solo requester for a few years before I gave up, which gives me hope that I can offer/request those fandoms and not beh the only person! Some of the pleasant surprises were Lady Sherlock, Hawkeye, The Fall (film), Gosford Park, The Proposal.

Also, I really hope that whomever nominated Plumber's Mate requests it again this year--I wanted to do a treat last year for it, but didn't have time to treat, so I really want to do it this year!

I usually love swaps, but I'm still working from home / not really leaving the house except for grocery shopping, and I don't think I want to deal with shopping for my recip and going to the post office. =/ can't decide if I should at least do bookswap on "ebooks only" mode or if it would just ruin the fun.

I want to watch some films or TV shows in Spanish so I can practice the language. Are there any good ones in the tagset?

Very pleased to see the fandom I cut from my nomination shortlist of four made it in—with at least two noms, and the characters including both halves of my OTP :D

NC, and, it didn't take a lot of work? The mods made a decision (based on two different people, at least, apparently, nominating things under "Plantagenet RPF" in different centuries), the Catherine nominator complained, the mods agreed to rearrange their categories. And if the nominator had made an evidence post in the first place this might have been completely bypassed.

The lesson I take from this (and my own similar experience this year) is to make evidence posts for my weird RPF groupings so as to hopefully avoid even this much work (which was really not much).

Of the ones in the tagset, I would recommend Alta Mar and Gran Hotel, if you like historical series. Both a tropey romance-and-intrigue series.

The Woman in White wasn't nommed :( I really wanted to treat for that.

One of my fandoms got split up, and while it makes sense and will make nominating easier in the future, I’m going to need a lot of willpower to not just request different eras of the same canon.

I will probably not write a letter.

The Scarlet Pimpernel has been nominated in book, movie and Japanese-musical-with-crossdressing varieties.

The book is up online here:

And the movie here:

(Content warning for anti-semitism and general reactionary nonsense in the book version, though. )

I was a mod for a large fandom exchange for several years (couple hundred sign-ups) and I don't have any "IT" skills beyond the necessary ones for, like, using Dreamwidth and AO3 etc.

There's a whole internet out there chock full of books, drinks, and candy, coalie. No need whatsoever to leave the house to participate.

+1

Pick a shop in whatever country they’re in and have it delivered to their address with a gift card/receipt from you, no packaging necessary. If you’re concerned about getting/spreading COVID, that’ll probably be more hygienic anyway.

Re: Is an AO3 account not enough?

Replying days later but one letter, no matter how long, isn't enough to really show off a person's reading preferences. I have yet to see a letter in isolation really do what you're claiming. So yeah, I'm happier if I'm assigned someone who updates fairly regularly. It's nicer to find someone who's active in fandom when I'm also active in fandom, especially when it comes to small fandoms.

My assignments are always really well-received and I write treats to cover the deficit, so it's very small in the grand scheme of things. But the OP asked if anyone cared, and I do. It's such a defensive coal response to default to "you're probably a bad writer!" because of a couple of comments stating a preference anonymously.

DC

You know what my hypothetical bookmarks and social media presence would tell about my reading preferences regarding Yuletide fandoms and fics I'd like to receive in the exchange? Nothing.

I always nominate with my own account and a couple of socks. One year I decided my socks should also sign up to game getting a popular fandom that probably wouldn't be eligible the next year. One of the socks was assigned the fandom I wanted, but I hated the requests, so I held onto the requests for a while and then my socks both defaulted; it was late enough that they both got gifts. As for the desired fandom, I wrote treats for the better requests on my main account, which were all highly recced and kudosed that year and remain popular years later. Anyway, my socks don't sign up for Yuletide anymore.

NA

I tried the filters on Promare and yeah, it's over. I guess it slipped in and the mods didn't catch it.

Lol okay I get it, you're really defensive about your beautifully crafted letters that will make any writer cry. Coal, keep on being you.
