Filling your exchange to the brim with fright!

NA.

When was bridgetmc a YT mod? And what happened that she isn't anymore?

I do hate wank so I shouldn't be asking but I knew her years and years ago in non-YT fandom so I can't help myself.

Jesus. You take your grudgewank seriously, don't you, coalie?

IDK if you're actually a troll but I've been in fandom a long-ass time: I've known enough nutjobs with excellent computer skills and enough mods who don't think things through properly before they pull the trigger. While I doubt you've shared all the actual details with us I don't doubt that some innocent people could get banned from YT because of a character assassination carried out by a hacker with a grudge. Christ knows it happens in politics all the damn time.

She was promoted from tag mod to mod mod in 2013 when elyn stepped aside. Was the public face of some unpopular rule changes (the attempted 2-nomination rule, character limits) and stepped down herself like a week later after fast and furious wanking.

AYRT

Thank you for the background. Is there a link to the wank this produced please? I feel bad for her being the public face of unpopular rule changes, which I take it never actually came in?

NA. There are the public faces of the mod teams in fandom exchanges, and then there are the unnamed shadow mods who work behind the scenes on things like wrangling, coding, policy and so on. IIRC there has been at least one shadow mod involved in YT since its launch, if not more.

I only have time to find namespace stuff, but I know there was wanking on coal and ffa. If you're logged in, you can search coal and ffa has their dememe function for searching - https://dememe.info (login is nonnie/pony)

Character limits announcement - https://yuletide-admin.livejournal.com/150743.html
Fandoms need 2 nominations announcement and retraction - https://yuletide-admin.livejournal.com/150380.html

The 2 nominations rule was never enacted, but the character limit rule was for that year. It's what got Natasha Romanov's cat nominated when Natasha Romanov wasn't eligible in her own comic series and we got the Clone Gwen Stacy wank, iirc. I'm pretty sure the rules changed again in 2014.

Nothing yet, but I tend to find something in IFComp every year. Why oh why must you open after noms are closed?

My mind still boggles at the two nominations thing. Why would you even think to propose that for a small fandom exchange...

You literally have no idea how any of this works and it is so, so embarrassing for you.

Something something tag bloat something something matchability

Maybe if any of the Yuletide mods actually could coding, they wouldn't have needed a saint of a passerby to supply the new matching code.

"IT skills"

What do these "IT skills" consist of, exactly? Knowing not to hit the big shiny button that says "delete all assignments"? Because, uh....

SWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPS

My fave part of Yuletide, no lie.

Do you know how you become an exchange mod? You start an exchange collection on Ao3, and then tell people about it on FFA or EAD or [insert fandom server here]. It takes no skill. I modded my first exchange this year, so I should know about the no skill part. Just a lot of crying and reading tag documentation.

The reaction was mostly at FFA and maybe in the old chat but that's lost to time, old!coal was only opened for the year after the rule retraction:

Genuinely, I have to wonder why you think that coalies (people who are obsessed enough about a fanfic exchange to spend months and months gossiping about it) are not largely the same people who spend time in other exchange spaces and see how modding decisions are actually made. You make it sound like mods hand out flyers at MIT career fairs to get co-mods and tag mods, rather than just posting "Hey, does anyone want to help with this?" in EAD.

Oh my god, I had totally forgotten about this ahahaha wow, what a bad idea.

Re: Why is AO3 piping so deeply stupid?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-09 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish there was a way that the first translation to show up in piping matched whatever language the fic was set to.

Do we know why this rule was proposed in the first place?

Hard Mode: Oglaf, Greir the Lesbian Mercenary/the lesbian pirates

Greir has nothing against the lesbian pirates, so hitching a ride on their ship had seemed like a smart move. All they wanted in return was spectacular sex which, fine. After she got the captain off ten times in a row, Greir's been sleeping in her cabin and that's better than fine.

Quite unfortunately, Greir has everything against parties.

"No," she says, staring flatly at the first mate. She's holding a party hat. "Go away."

"Sorry, but no." The first mate shrugs. She has amazing tits and the shrugging is doing them all the favors. "The weekly orgies are mandatory."

I think the idea was to prevent people from shoehorning megafandoms in by making sure they couldn't ask for popular characters even when the adjacent fandom was technically small enough for Yuletide.

Re: Your Yuletide sins

(Anonymous) 2020-10-09 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The two nominations rule was something about tag bloat, there being a bunch of tags that never got fic written for them (but were still wrangled?), and it being a strain on the servers. I don't think the mods ever offered a real explanation or their reasoning.

Tbh, I think that was what kicked off people being really cavalier about using socks to nominate everything they might want instead of sticking to the prescribed number of noms (or previously keeping quiet about socking up).

lmaooooooo this is so funny. I assure you that no one checked my credentials before letting me mod multiple exchanges this year.

Oops, I thought this was in response to a comment upthread. Other coalie is right about the tag bloat reason, I was talking about the situation regarding characters from large fandoms that also appear in smaller fandoms.
