This is Yuletide, everybody make a scene

I am the sock with the tear-away face
Low-effort with your gift and gone without a trace
I am the "who" when you call, "Who does an exchange without acknowledging their gift?"
I am the wanker blowing through your fics comments
I am the coalie dragging your letter at night
Filling your exchange to the brim with fright!

This is Coaltide!

There are actual hackers in fandom, my dude. AO3 also ain't that hard to hack.

A friend had to delete their Yuletide signup a few years ago but didn't tell me why they decided to drop out before assignments even went out. I stupidly named-and-shamed them about it while anon during some other wank. Then I found out they'd deleted their signup because they'd received a serious medical diagnosis. They don't do coal or FFA so they have no idea what I did and I feel too guilty to tell them I was such a shitty friend because I was being a brat.

AYRT. Thank you, Coalie. You've made me feel a hell of a lot better!

True and idk why more people don't remember LJ passwords have been hacked so often they've shown up for sale online.

I can totally see this sort of thing happening. Back in my Usenet days, a couple of people were banned from one fan and fanfic forum supposedly for intensely flaming one of the mods over shipping preferences. But IIRC the mod who did the banning was turfed out when the other mods realized the now-ex-mod went to high school with the people who were banned. There was gossip behind the scenes that the ex-mod had been a popular kid at school who was worried the others would blab her "shameful secret" that she was a fanfic writer on the internet but IDK how true it all was.

ITA. Also, I thought it would be obvious to pretty much anyone here that mods of anything internet-based would need to have good IT skills? Mods needing to expand their team often recruit from within their forum or exchange as they need people with good IT skills who also have a passion for the project.

Nice try, OP.

I think you would lose that bet, Coalie: you sound more like OP than those posters do, to be honest. Are you OP, pulling some MsScribe, 4D chess level shit, posting contrary replies and accusing other people in the thread of being you just for the lulz?

If it was edited well after the assignment went out, it's not really a sin.

Do you need to double-check the definition of disingenuous, coalie? YMMV, sure, but it seemed to be a pretty sincere and on-topic comment. It's also a good point.

DA. What are you talking about, Coalie? OP is very real with very real skillsets, that they used. The exchange world is blind and stupid for not believing in them, and not distrusting mod McCarthyism behind the scenes.

Drabble Challenge Day 1

(Anonymous) 2020-10-08 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Today's themes/prompts are: cold, magic and first time!

How to play: reply to this thread with your drabble, ficlet or link. Try to stay anon. Start your comment with "Hard Mode" if your drabble is exactly 100 words long. Yuletide-sized fandoms encouraged but not required.

CYRT. My very worst YT recipients, including those who never said thank you, have dozens of non-exchange stories on AO3 and have regularly-updated Tumblr/DW/LJ accounts. My YT recipients who have left the best feedback and comments have had little to no Tumblr/DW/LJ presence, and one actually had a completely-empty AO3 account prior to that YT. All wrote great DYW letters.

To have gone into YT those years where my recipient had a lack of internet presence with a downer attitude would have done all of those awesome recipients a serious disservice.

This thread should have demonstrated clearly to you that a lot of people don't link other platforms to their AO3 identity, mostly for reasons of privacy, and that the content you'll find on the other platforms some people do link their AO3 to will be of little to no use to their YT writer.

I have ADHD so have to deal with hyperfocus daily. What I'm "reading into" is what sounds an intense dislike for any situation you can't control, including by knowing as much information as possible. Just chill out and enjoy YT, okay?

How do you think mods interact?

NC. Not all mods are saints: some abuse their power, some trust people they shouldn't, and some make dumb decisions hastily or when they don't have all the facts. OP is a real person and whether their story is true in part or in full is unclear, but there are plenty of shitty people involved in fandom and some of those shitty people happen to be mods, or are trusted by mods.

Mods are human and are neither perfect nor infallible. Mods outside of YT have definitely made mistakes: writers have been dragged, blacklisted and even outright banned when they shouldn't have been and considering YT has been running since 2003, I'd be surprised if it hasn't happened in YT at least once.

The thing is, just because they talked about liking the thing before or in certain context, doesn't mean they are in the mood for it now or for that specific fandom/characters. I don't do AO3 bookmarks in part because of wild assumptions I've seen around based on them (and not just in the context of the exchanges). My mood/preferences vary wildly and I have a lot of "I don't usually like this thing, but this one fic works for me" moments too. I'd rather not have a "pleasant surprise" I forgot to explicitly DNW - or merely didn't ask for because I didn't feel like it - sprung on me because someone feels they deduced what I really want, thanks.

And anyway, it's supposed to be for your recip, not for feeding your self-image of the most perfect gift-giver ever. And I say this as someone who does make note of things like that for social purposes irl. There are limits. For a fic exchange, someone with a long letter really doesn't need to give you anything else.

I'm late for this party but why would Coal of all places not realize that this sort of fuckup could happen really easily in a world this shitty and full of injustice? People's lives get ruined every day because of false accusations, even when none of those accusations should ever have been believed, especially by well-educated, clever people. The AO3 mods, as great as they are, aren't going to be any more immune to manipulation than the rest of the population.

If you do a Yuletide sign-up, can you delete it before sign-ups close without penalty?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-08 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
I've only been doing Yuletide since 2019 so I'm sorry for the stupid question, guys, but is it bad Yuletide etiquette, or against Yuletide rules, to delete a Yuletide sign-up before sign-ups close? I don't want to waste the time of the mods, but I feel like if I have to default on my assignment would waste their time more than if I just delete my sign-up before sign-ups close if I know I probably won't be able to give it the time it deserves?

(I don't want to miss Yuletide this year, but real life stuff means while I have time at the moment to write a good sign-up, I won't really know if I'll have enough time in November and December to write my recipient a good gift until basically the day before sign-ups close.)

Re: If you do a Yuletide sign-up, can you delete it before sign-ups close without penalty?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-08 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, there's no problem.

NA. I fear that if a blatant YT smear campaign were to happen today, most of the people here would obviously be joining the lynch mob, a lack of actual evidence beyond something circumstantial be damned.

+1

We just had a coalie bring up being on the receiving end of something in this vein in this very post. I have doubts about the actual level of success, but tbh even if most of it didn't happen, having a fantasy like that over fandom fallout years ago is bad enough. I don't fear being the next victim, but I'd rather not interact with someone like this even if everything goes fine.

(Is it me, or is the aggression up way too early this year? First there was BEC-ing over Trialia for nothing, and now too eager troll-calling. Hurry up, letter post?)

It doesn't matter. But why not just write your prompts and choose your offers ahead of time and sign up on the last day?

Re: What's it going to take for the YT mods to get rid of the FF.net rule?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-08 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
I fear that I must inform you that I have time-travelled from the future, and we count FF.net and two new platforms to come that I will not go in further detail over for safety's sake. AO3 has been ruled obsolete for a few decades now.
