It was just badly written (both plot- and language-wise). The same author wrote for me seven years later in a different exchange, and they were still a bad writer. Both fandoms they wrote for starred the same actor, so I will no longer request any character he plays.

I've been gifted a few real stinkers.

The worst two were just really badly written. Written by the same writer, no less, but a couple of years apart and in two different fandoms.

The writer appears to have dropped out of YT (although they are still around), but I did avoid signing up for any fandom in YT I thought they may write in for a few years.

I've been really lucky with Yuletide gifts, mine have always been great, but I got a real stinker in a different exchange a few years ago. The writer just...retold what happened in the canon? Added nothing new, not even fancier language that was interesting to read or insightful new perspectives on any characters' emotions. It felt like that boring acquaintance everyone has who insists on telling you the plot of their favourite film to get you to watch it but only makes sure you'll NEVER watch it because they make it sound like dogshit.

I've been really lucky with Yuletide gifts. They've always been tailored to my taste and from writers who obviously really cared about writing something I'd enjoy.

Now, other exchanges, I've had more mixed luck. I'm still pretty fortunate but I've had a couple stinkers, like the one who took a M/M request and wrote something where one half of the couple was crushing on a woman and the other half just mooned around about it, and there wasn't a real ending.

Like everyone else, I’ve generally been lucky in 10+ years of Yuletide and nothing has been outright horrible. If I had to pick a worst one, it was one with just mediocre writing and was not well-developed. It didn’t help that the summary said “it’s the spy AU no one asked for!” and I remember thinking “but I asked for it. Explicitly. I assume that is how you got the idea to write this.” So that set a tone.

The other worst one was actually well-written, but it heavily featured the author’s OCs that were clearly from a novel they were working on and they cared about more than the actual requested characters.

How long do the mods usually take for the tagset?

About a week. Look at the ETA schedule. It’s the 24h window for replies that takes the most time.

Mostly I've gotten great gifts. A couple are stand out brilliant. But one year I requested A/B for a canon where A/B and A/C were canon, and despite saying I'd be happy with gen or friendship fic if they didn't ship it I got A/C fic with C lecturing B about how he should leave A alone. Technically not against the rules as I got my requested characters, but very disappointing

I forget exactly when they changed that, but they've been doing it since at least last year's round.

Then I hope there are no questions about my dentist’s nominations. Sure I can give my dentist a name but idk it becomes another thing to keep track of.

Just put the same name as the ao3 account.

I've mostly been very lucky! a couple of times I've gotten things that were just... boring, or badly written, or were unsatisfyingly pre-relationship, but I've never had anyone hit a DNW or anything like that. and for the most part the not-great fics have been short, so I can comment quickly and move on to all the other great fics in the exchange!

Oh God. That’s awful!

I had a similar gift one year (in a non-YT exchange) which featured a whole bunch of unrequested sexuality headcanon content. There was a lot of discussion about asexuality and being aromantic within my ship...while the other character who is clearly borderline asexual in canon was written as flat out heterosexual with an OC partner they were having lots of sex with.

It was really strange. I wasn’t sure at first if it was a wind up, but then figured the author was working through something in their own life that came out in the fic.

When you link to your noms page, does it show the mods the name of the AO3 account that nommed it?

A longfic that didn’t explore anything interesting and had a lot of typos. It took me so long to get through it and then try to find something nice to say that I couldn’t even start on treats until the next day. It wasn’t criminally bad but its sheer length and constant misspellings sucked the Yuletide joy out of that day.

Otherwise I’ve been very lucky.

As I understand it, it does not. They can see all the nominations at once and will know they were submitted by the same account, but they still can't see which account.
