I've been really lucky with Yuletide gifts, mine have always been great, but I got a real stinker in a different exchange a few years ago. The writer just...retold what happened in the canon? Added nothing new, not even fancier language that was interesting to read or insightful new perspectives on any characters' emotions. It felt like that boring acquaintance everyone has who insists on telling you the plot of their favourite film to get you to watch it but only makes sure you'll NEVER watch it because they make it sound like dogshit.
