You know what would be really cool? If scorpiod and opheliahyde each wrote their own letters instead of c/ping from each other:

https://scorpiod.dreamwidth.org/6286.html
https://opheliahyde.dreamwidth.org/121376

Every place that they have overlapping fandoms (IT, From Dusk Til Dawn, You) it's near-identical.

Scorpiod:

I love Guinevere Beck so much> and I love twisted femslash, so I’d love to see any take on these two ships.

+ My kingdom for an AU where Peach doesn’t die and they kill/stop/send Joe to jail. Peach/Beck hurt/comfort follows afterwards, maybe they even go to Paris like Peach planned, but Peach/Beck is still all kinds of messy and creepy.

+ I want backstory! They’re best friends with creepy poor boundaries! I’d love to see their childhood or adolescence together, blurring the line between friends and something more, and how Peach got so attached to her. I’d love Beck to realize/know Peach is in fact, bad news, but she doesn’t know how to cut her out of her life after knowing her for so long, and on some level, doesn’t want to because she enjoys the attention and loves her in her own needy way, too.

+ Fooling around as teenagers/college kids together!. Perhaps they did have a short term fling that Peach has never been able to let go.

+ Anything with Peach stalking her, overstepping boundaries, taking photos, watching her sleep, dressing her up and buying her clothes, and being controlling but with a sweet facade. “Taking care” of Beck in the way that suits Peach.

+ I wish we had gotten to see more of Beck’s side of the relationship, more of what she got out of Peach being in her life, or just Beck’s article on Peach’s death and more of her processing her death. I’d love to see Beck try to reconcile knowing that Peach was in love with her and wanted to own her in some way, but missing her deeply regardless.

Surely it must be someone trying to sign up twice? Which seems like a terribly obvious way to break the rules; at least try a tiny bit to make it seem different!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It might not be! Some people have talked about getting their letters copied before. And for Yuletide, I had someone who shared a fandom with me copy word-for-word my DNWs, which was not just a coincidence because I had full-sentence clarifications in parentheses that were all preserved.

I don't think so, they're two friends. If they are the same person then they're extremely committed to writing for each other/commenting on each other's fics, maintaining DWs and tumblrs, etc.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's really nice for them that they're close and that they have the same fandoms and likes! But not so great for a writer, I'd feel a little bit odd about it, like... which bit of your letter did you actually write, recip? Am I writing for you or your friend?

Not a big deal really though I guess.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, on one hand I get this, but on the other hand, if they want the same stuff, I guess I don't see why they should need to go out of their way to re-write?

+1

I've had the exact line of thought demonstrated in this thread: "Wait, sock?... No, seems to be two codependent individuals, okay, probably don't want to get involved in that."

Which might be dramatic, because they seem nice enough and they're both very good writers, it's just really strange.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
On the plus side, if you write something for them they both like, they might both comment. I'm shallow enough that that would be a big draw for me.

It happens more frequently than you might think. My sock and I pretended to date in one fandom. You learn to tell when someone is lying when they say 'oh no, we're married/friends/pure strangers who happen to share interests.'

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretended to date? That seems like a weird level of commitment.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's just full on mental illness. Even worse than referring to your second account as another person, like "she offered other fandoms than I did" (though that's really bad and creepy too).

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think "my sock offered different fandoms" is fine, but a whole elaborate set of interactions is just a lot of effort to put in to maintain a charade. Maybe not mental illness - it could just be compared to RPing - but certainly a little odd.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Why?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
I would guess because they want to have a sock that has the same interests/fandoms as themselves but don’t want to deal with people like OP exposing them for it. Also like others gave said, it is just RPing. If this was real life I would question the amount of effort needed, but switching accounts online just to maintain a fake identity is the lowest/most tame level of catfishing. If they were having anon discussions, “both” identities were on a live chat at the same time, or whatever I would be like o.O

(Anonymous) 2020-01-20 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I still don't understand choosing to date your own sock. Switching accounts to have separate activity, sure, whatever, but pretending to date?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-20 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
maybe bc of shared fandoms? my socks request my overflow fandoms so we never “interact” but if you 1) share all fandoms 2) like the exact same stuff i kinda get why your sock being a sister/sig-other/bff makes sense. it gives you breathing room if you accidentally blur the lines on your lies. “i just went to spain!” “wow crazy, fangirl69 was there too right? i remember her mentioning it earlier. what are the odds” “uhhh yeah, that’s my wife! we went together lol” “cool i had no idea you guys were married”

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't know if someone pretending to be friends/dating their socks is really more frequent than two friends with similar likes signing up for the same exchanges. Because it's just natural to talk your fandom friends who share your likes into doing the same exchanges.

That and there are at least two exchange regulars out there whose tastes are ridiculously similar to mine. I don't know them! But looking at our letters you could easily think one of us is the other's sock.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That reminds me of the exchange participant who copied my DNWs word by word. I checked out their letter because they wrote for me and I had never encountered their username before, so I wanted to know who they were. They were clearly a sock, and for all intends and purposes, they looked like they were MY sock, but they 100% weren't. That was super weird. (But I loved the gift they wrote for me, so I didn't really care.)

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone copied my uniquely worded likes and specific prompts in a fandom of few where it was really obvious that they had.

It annoyed me, because typing up letters takes time and swiping mine isn’t exactly a good way to make me feel like writing for you. If you can’t even be bothered to come up with your own words for why you like the fandom, why should I believe you actually care about it? Even more than that though...I have no interest in writing my own prompts? If I did I would have written them already.

So I avoided that person and have them on my never treat list, lol.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oof, I think I would have been tempted to contact them and ask them to change the wording on the prompts.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-19 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn’t worth the potential wank for me. I really just considered them as I would my own sock (never talked to them, aren’t in the market to treat them, make sure I don’t offer the fandom so I can’t match to them) and called it a day. I guess they either don’t care about making people feel eh at their actions or they’re someone who thinks like “I would love if someone copied my letter because then I know we like the same things and I can treat them endlessly!” so they don’t see their actions as potentially discouraging to the very person they consider most likely to appreciate it. It could also be that they see that I get a lot of treats that are amazing and so they grabbed my letter hoping it would get the similar results.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, that's weird, but on the other hand, who gives a shit?

They have letters; I don't see what difference it really makes to theirs assigned writers where the content of those letters comes from. Presumably if that wasn't what they wanted to receive they wouldn't have c+ped it into the letter. Just write to the letter and don't worry about it.
