That's a very weird line to want to draw, I mean people are often drawn to what's not canon, so fluffy fics for grim dark canons and dark versions of fluffy canons are so common they're practically cliché.

Agreed. I understand that they're annoyed and the comment seems more venting than anything else, but a lot of the time, the entire point of fic is to give people what they can't get in canon. What this person wants from their fic seems very narrow to me.

I can see where they're coming from though. It's one thing to request Hannibal and prompt mostly fluff, but another to DNW: cannibalism. Like, I can work with a recip who doesn't want anything gory or violent and doesn't want an emphasis on the eating people thing, but at some point, you're just removing anything resembling the original character and what people may possibly like the canon/character for.

It's not so much about requesting stuff that goes counter to canon, though, it's about DNWing stuff that is canon. The way I read that comment, they're totally okay with people requesting fluffy Jessica/Kilgrave, just not with people DNWing mentions of rape in this case. It's kind of like with requesting shipfic in Yuletide. You're absolutely free to request it, but if you DNW gen, it can't be enforced.

To me, it makes sense because canon is what the writer and reader should have in common as something they like, sort of the lowest common denominator. If you get a writer who sings up thinking if all else fails, they can writer canon-compliant stuff, and a reader who wants anything but that, it can lead to trouble.

I get it in theory, and I understand they were being tongue in cheek with the "I, the fandom arbiter" thing, but the real problem with this concept is figuring out what is actually "essential" for canon complaint stuff.

Say a canon contains noncon, dubcon, and consensual sex and almost all of those things can apply to the same characters. What's essential to be canon compliant?

I also know this is all theoretical and OP at FFA wasn't demanding things this way or no way, but it's a thread that's making me think.
