The four they really want are nominated, but instead of just requesting those, they also requested over ten others. We matched on two of those ten others. And the way they've phrased their letter (slightly different to how I wrote it here) makes it sound like they think we just matched on "fandom" and that if I choose not to write one of the four, it'll be kind of rude of me and like I'll be putting my preferences first.

I guess you're right about just doing a short odoa thing but I wrote a long fic last year and was hoping to again, I had some fun ideas for these two pairings based on other people who'd requested it but I'm not writing 5+k for someone who doesn't care. I'm sad though, plus anyone looking at my ao3 might be like "huh, they didn't put much effort into their assignment".

(Very tempting to leave that note, but then I'd be wanked about!)

Write the long fic as a treat and 301 words for your recip? I don't think many people looking through your AO3 profile would a. check which one was your actual assignment or b. assume you didn't put effort into the assignment if they did as long as it's a complete scene. I'd just assume the prompt or initial idea was better/inspired you more/was a longer story to tell.

You can always orphan the 301-worder or put it into the anon collection if you really think it looks bad on you.

Yeah, another vote for writing 301 words with the snarky A/N and orphaning it. They earned it.

And then go write something awesome for someone else. Nobody needs to know it's not your assignment -- maybe the recip got double-assigned!

Write something short but sweet! Nothing wrong with that.

Your instincts re: the note are good, though, it's a bad idea.
