Pretty sure that you can DNW gen in Yuletide. I've done it until last year (when I came to coal and saw it being mentioned as a no-no) and no one ever told me off. I'm also relatively sure I've seen it in letters this year.

DC The question is whether or not it would be enforceable if it came to it.

Oh, I'm sure it's not. But I think a lot of people DNW things not because of enforceability but to make sure the author knows they won't enjoy / read a fic that contains those things.

NA

There's no way it's enforceable. Especially not with how much ODAO is pushed by the mods.

You can DNW anything you choose, but some things won't ever be enforced, like a DNW for gen. You can't force someone to write shipfic (or genfic for that matter) in an ODAO exchange.

DA You could say "I love noncon, please give me noncon" and it would communicate the exact same info and be exactly as enforceable. So why make it a DNW? It's a dick move in general.

Re: Chocolate Box

(Anonymous) 2020-01-03 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's in the rules that it's not enforceable.

I’m going to prompt for the awful things of my dreams too! If only my letter would write itself.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-03 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
How about saying, "open to treats in any media"? That would mean you were open to not only fic and art, but also vids, play lists, etc. Possibly would look less like singling art out as being not-as-good?

You can't DNW gen because that's railroading your author into writing shipfic, but you can absolutely DNW the matched characters in a relationship, unrequested ships, or just straight-up DNW shipfic. If you are only interested in writing porn, Yuletide is not the exchange for you.

Technically you can DNW x/z fic but you can't stop a writer from writing the two characters while skirting around an actual ship but having them act in shippy ways and still labeling it gen. I've been on the receiving end of that myself. Some are more transparent than others.

Also, shipfic does not equal porn. Not sure if that's what you're saying with the last sentence or not, but if so, not the same.

No, I meant what I said, because I think even if you ship characters, you should still be able to write them interacting as friends (or enemies, as the case may be) unless you're literally only interested in porn. Or contextless kissing, I guess.

If all you care about is writing gen, Yuletide isn’t the exchange for you. You should stick to fandoms that do OR matching or match on &-relationships.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-03 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that much better! So simple, too ... nice one, coalie.

Huh, it turns out if you change the words in a sentence, sometimes it's wrong when the original sentence was right. Language is so amazing!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
But the exchange is only open to two media: fic and art. It would be super weird to make someone a play list for Chocolate Box, in my opinion.

I don't think it would be all that weird if you said that you were open to such things. Personally, if I were to receive a vid or even something like an icon set as a treat for one of my admittedly small fandoms, I'd love it.

Yuletide and Trick or Treat are the only exchanges you can reasonably expect to write gen for, wtf.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
That was an adult artist and the recipient's only gift.

Well this does not relieve me because I am requesting something that fits the bill. It's not a TV show, is it?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
One of the reasons I would never request art in any exchange.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-04 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Good.

Only if you're an asshole, in my opinion, but some people do it.

I'd rather get a terrible art gift than a terrible fic gift. I can fake two lines of enthusiasm over bad art and I only have to look at it once in my whole life. For fic, I have to fake gush for a couple of paragraphs with quotes which means reading it again and god help me if it's long. Bad art is one and done. Bad fic lingers like a three day dead flounder.
