Re: Fandoms to Nom for 2020 Exchanges

As one of the people who couldn't work it out, thanks for explaining. I got stuck on the BBC thing as it's so fixed in my head as a acronym for the British tv channel that I was trying to figure out if it meant something about fetishizing thuggish characters from BBC shows but couldn't figure how that worked in this discussion.

The names thing is interesting, as while, because in my culture those names wouldn't bring to mind privileged right wing types at all, for most of those names people would probably guess the opposite stereotype. Which is half the problem of throwing around stock attack phrases like the unhelpful coalie from upthread, as they only work if everyone is familiar with the specific stereotypes being invoked.

Yeah it barely lasted a week, ffa tried a bunch of spinoffs, reviews-anon, original-sinners, crimedrama-anon and the namespacememe, but it always went the same, lots of initial interest in the idea, but no posting in the comms

:(

What was the namespacememe?

http://allfandom-chat.dreamwidth.org

It really didn't take off at all, partly due to the mod disappearing after the first day and not changing the layout after people asked them too. Original ffa thread announcing it https://fail-fandomanon.livejournal.com/64910.html?thread=304523150#t304523150

Another coalie here who never heard BBC used for anything but the British TV channel, so thanks for the info.

But in some cases the names do seem to be references to American sitcoms, actually! This one for example: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Sure%20Jan

Re: Fandoms to Nom for 2020 Exchanges

sureJan was the only one I was familiar with, that and the nonnie from ffa who tried to make butthurt!Lois Griffin a thing (and they would never explain it either) so I had assumed the other names were specific references I was unfamiliar with, like sitcoms that weren't popular in my country or memes like the "Hi, Rebecca, did you forget I had a livejournal" thing

You know what would be really cool? If scorpiod and opheliahyde each wrote their own letters instead of c/ping from each other:

https://scorpiod.dreamwidth.org/6286.html
https://opheliahyde.dreamwidth.org/121376

Every place that they have overlapping fandoms (IT, From Dusk Til Dawn, You) it's near-identical.

Scorpiod:

I love Guinevere Beck so much> and I love twisted femslash, so I’d love to see any take on these two ships.

+ My kingdom for an AU where Peach doesn’t die and they kill/stop/send Joe to jail. Peach/Beck hurt/comfort follows afterwards, maybe they even go to Paris like Peach planned, but Peach/Beck is still all kinds of messy and creepy.

+ I want backstory! They’re best friends with creepy poor boundaries! I’d love to see their childhood or adolescence together, blurring the line between friends and something more, and how Peach got so attached to her. I’d love Beck to realize/know Peach is in fact, bad news, but she doesn’t know how to cut her out of her life after knowing her for so long, and on some level, doesn’t want to because she enjoys the attention and loves her in her own needy way, too.

+ Fooling around as teenagers/college kids together!. Perhaps they did have a short term fling that Peach has never been able to let go.

+ Anything with Peach stalking her, overstepping boundaries, taking photos, watching her sleep, dressing her up and buying her clothes, and being controlling but with a sweet facade. “Taking care” of Beck in the way that suits Peach.

+ I wish we had gotten to see more of Beck’s side of the relationship, more of what she got out of Peach being in her life, or just Beck’s article on Peach’s death and more of her processing her death. I’d love to see Beck try to reconcile knowing that Peach was in love with her and wanted to own her in some way, but missing her deeply regardless.

Surely it must be someone trying to sign up twice? Which seems like a terribly obvious way to break the rules; at least try a tiny bit to make it seem different!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It might not be! Some people have talked about getting their letters copied before. And for Yuletide, I had someone who shared a fandom with me copy word-for-word my DNWs, which was not just a coincidence because I had full-sentence clarifications in parentheses that were all preserved.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think so, they're two friends. If they are the same person then they're extremely committed to writing for each other/commenting on each other's fics, maintaining DWs and tumblrs, etc.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
That's really nice for them that they're close and that they have the same fandoms and likes! But not so great for a writer, I'd feel a little bit odd about it, like... which bit of your letter did you actually write, recip? Am I writing for you or your friend?

Not a big deal really though I guess.

And the femslash meme, although that at least lasted long enough to get a second post.

Trying anything new for CB?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone planning on trying something new for Chocolate Box? Writing a fandom you haven't written before, or a type of fic you haven't written, or a new kink?

Re: Trying anything new for CB?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping to write for two new fandoms!

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, on one hand I get this, but on the other hand, if they want the same stuff, I guess I don't see why they should need to go out of their way to re-write?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I've had the exact line of thought demonstrated in this thread: "Wait, sock?... No, seems to be two codependent individuals, okay, probably don't want to get involved in that."

Which might be dramatic, because they seem nice enough and they're both very good writers, it's just really strange.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
On the plus side, if you write something for them they both like, they might both comment. I'm shallow enough that that would be a big draw for me.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, that's weird, but on the other hand, who gives a shit?

They have letters; I don't see what difference it really makes to theirs assigned writers where the content of those letters comes from. Presumably if that wasn't what they wanted to receive they wouldn't have c+ped it into the letter. Just write to the letter and don't worry about it.

PSA: Feedback for Yuletide 2019

Posting here instead of the Yuletide post because that one seems to be mostly dead at this point... the mods have opened feedback for the 2019 round: https://yuletide-admin.dreamwidth.org/74350.html

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It happens more frequently than you might think. My sock and I pretended to date in one fandom. You learn to tell when someone is lying when they say 'oh no, we're married/friends/pure strangers who happen to share interests.'

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretended to date? That seems like a weird level of commitment.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's just full on mental illness. Even worse than referring to your second account as another person, like "she offered other fandoms than I did" (though that's really bad and creepy too).

(Anonymous) 2020-01-18 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think "my sock offered different fandoms" is fine, but a whole elaborate set of interactions is just a lot of effort to put in to maintain a charade. Maybe not mental illness - it could just be compared to RPing - but certainly a little odd.

And it's 50% "Don't stop posting to DW" and "Make AO3 do a thing it doesn't yet do."
