I'm someone who really likes canon divergence, but I want it to be purposeful, not something that just looks like laziness.
Like if the story is framed as "What if the Titanic hadn't hit that iceberg" or "What if Cersei and Jaime hadn't pushed that kid out of the window?", that's the kind of story I really like.
Meanwhile, "Yes I know that Starbucks didn't exist in 1940 but I love Starbucks and no on is going to notice if my WWII era characters are drinking low-fat pumpkin spice frappuccinos" would be very annoying.
