(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)More people signing up to become wranglers is the main way to handle that. I think there's like maybe less than 200 active wranglers at any given time. Some fandoms get like 1k tags a month. Wranglers get to choose what fandom they work on so usually for small fandoms a mod will wrangle it right when it's first created and then it isn't touched again unless someone submits a ticket or someone new joins the wrangling team and picks it up as a passion project.
Re: hot takes ao3 edition
(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)Tags in active fandoms generally wrangle fast.
Tags in unwatched fandoms can take awhile, but those are usually small enough it's not really needed.
New fandom tags are pretty fast unless they're tricky, and automation wouldn't solve tricky cases.
Non-fandom tags are never because we don't have a set of guidelines for them and nobody can agree on how to make more. That's also not solvable by automation.
(Basically, people power is not the bottleneck here, we have to turn volunteers away, it's project management.)

(Anonymous) 2021-11-04 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)Then they were like, this is not sustainable (fair), so they turned that off "temporarily" and said let's go through a complicated consensus-building process so that every wrangler has input on every be canonical! But first we need a committee. And then the committee fell in the Sarlaac, to be slowly digested over a thousand years. Every few years someone waves a hand and shouts "don't worry we're working on it!"
So the no-fandom tags are basically frozen in amber c. 2014 until someone lights a fire under tw comm's ass. Which somebody needs to do already. (oh look we found my hot take.)
I did a calculation with that giant tags data dump and fixing all the NF tags with a reasonable number of uses would take a dozen or so experienced wranglers maybe a few weeks dedicated work, but not if they had to get a mailing list's consensus on every onen
