I don't get super mad about well-behaved socks but I will say that as a participant even well-behaved socks can be frustrating.

-if you match on one it can be frustrating to have nothing at all but a letter and maybe a few other gifts. I'm not even someone who stalks recips, but I'm going to read certain things in you letter differently if you're an experienced active fan vs. a newb who just stopped lurking. If I can tell.

-also if you match with a probably-sock anonymity is harder? I sometimes post writing updates to a small locked group, but I know some of them sock up for yt, so I feel like I can't even freely, like, ask for a canon beta unless I know whose sock it is.

-if i get a gift fic and it's the best thing I've ever read, I want to go find the rest of your stuff too :(

-if I get a gift fic and it's coal, I'm going to slant my comment differently if it's a newb doing their best vs. someone's lazy sock. If I can tell

Like most of those would go away if people could just sign up twice, and they don't apply to long-standing, well-worn socks, but it's still always a letdown to check in on a participant and see ... blank space.

When I started writing fic and had exactly two fics to my name, I signed up for Yuletide and people assumed I was a sock. I wasn't; I just had no previous fandom presence. However, I've been writing since I was a kid and I'd been reading fic for a few years, so I didn't come off all wide-eyed. I don't think there's ever a good way of sussing this out. Coal is coal. Be mean or don't be mean. You don't really need to develop... tiers of response??

Look some of us are neurotic about comments that's just how it is?

There's neuroses and then there's neuroses.

Are you saying "not wanting to accidentally destroy a beginner who didn't know" is a sign of extra super neurosis? Wow.

I'm saying destroying anybody is certainly a choice.

Have you been on coal

Destroying anyone to their face/in the comments of the actual fic is definitely different than here. Have you been on coal?

I mean, I was thinking more that some minor passive-aggressiveness that a longtime coalie with twelve socks is going to brush off might be a critical hit on a newbie who only has 10 HP, not that I go around intentionally destroying people.

I've been on FFA, I know that the 12-socker will still be talking about the minor passive-aggressiveness in 2031.

Do you not comment until after author reveals? Otherwise how would you be able to tell what kind of participant they are?

I comment before reveals, but I usually wait until after to reply to a writer's comment if I'm going to. Usually I rec my gifts before reveals except that one year I got a coal treat I couldn't rec in good conscience, and thus did wait to see who they were. If I'm considering taking a rules violation to the mods though, I'm definitely waiting to see if they should have known better or not. If I can tell. (Which I didn't for that treat because I'm 99% sure they really were just new, incompetent and clueless.)
