This made me decide to go look at last year's wrap ups.

[personal profile] seal_girl: I was looking back at these and I decided that the pinch-hits that I wrote in two days were fics that I like better than the ones I had months to fret about and faff around with.

I wonder how that makes their recips feel and if they can tell which ones were rushed or if they agree if they're better or worse. Is it good to admit publically that you know some are better when you could have defaulted again to make sure they got a better fic? Maybe they should have only taken one PH?

[personal profile] choirwoman straight up admitted they were bragging and consider a reveals post bragging, which is charming.

[personal profile] primeideal admits a couple of their fics are self-inserts which isn't always the best.

[personal profile] lannamichaels admits to writing a sequel maybe? And that they gifted drawerfic that happened to work out. Would not have admitted that and would feel a bit sad if I saw my author bragging about it in longform. This one shouldn't have been linked to the post and could have been saved just for her flist.

[personal profile] dragonbat2006 is bold for admitting what they struggled with. I wonder how I would feel if I also thought those parts were weak and my author outright admits it. Couldn't they have found a beta or something?

[personal profile] estirose talking about why they weren't going to treat someone and yet decided to claim them as a PH leaves a bad taste in my mouth. This one didn't need to be linked either.

[personal profile] calliopes_pen's post was worthless but linked to the fic which had a similar authors note situation to this one. The hits/kudos ratio is very telling lol. Was there wank or did it just land badly within the fandom?

[personal profile] luthien's is one of the most embarassing thing's I've ever read, from the storytime in the third person to...everything else.

I think I've realized that I'm not the target demographic for this stuff and I would be heartbroken if my author ever did one???? That was agony.

I was hoping estirose's was so much wankier but it's just them saying a blank signup didn't grab them the first time.

Why share this?? Why??? Either the recip will feel bad (which sucks) or they will be justified with their decision since it got them a fic any (so you saying they nearly missed out on a fic from you is moot)?

Re: Trick or Treat

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Or they'll take it totally neutrally?

Re: Trick or Treat

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
If it’s neutral why highlight it! The recip of the ToT fic could take it neutrally too, that doesn’t mean that the author had to say it 💀

Let me guess, you also hate coalies discussing letters.

No?

Re: Trick or Treat

My bad. This just sounds to me like the coalies who say "What is the point of letter games? I didn't get any useful feedback on mine last time; I only received feedback that my ideas didn't work for the coalies who commented. Letter games are useless."

I'm one of these coalies and I like or am neutral on post-exchange write ups. I also like 3T1L. Those things aren't all the same. You can like one and hate the other.

If they feel bad for a blank sign-up they might actually put something in their sign ups in the future. Which isn't a negative outcome.

Re: Trick or Treat

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Or they'd think "Maybe it doesn't get me treats, but it got me a gift I liked," and feel content, which is also a fine outcome.

It's 67k in a rare fandom, coalie. A lot of people probably clicked on it just because they were impressed at that word length in Yuletide and then it didn't grab them for some reason.

I don't know, if I ever wrote 67k for Yuletide you bet I'd write a long author's note about my research process. I'd be over the moon. Hopefully my recipient would be too but are we not allowed to pat ourselves on the back even a little? What sort of tall poppy syndrome were you raised with?

What was the post of having a reveals post then! This is someone’s gift, it seems presumptuous and a but rude to gift them something that long (and I love longfic) and also give them a bunch of research notes too. Based on the comments nobody seemed to care, they could have put it in their reveals post for those who enjoy that stuff and not made it even more obvious the fic was their passion project rather than something for their recip. That’s my issue, not that they’re proud of it. Stating the prompt from the start feels like “well you asked for it” and is not a good way to endear someone to your very long indulgent fic.

Re: Trick or Treat

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Coalie, truly, there is nothing negative here rather than what you put in. There is nothing in this author's note that says they wrote it for themselves RATHER than their recip. There is nothing negative about saying briefly "written for X prompt". What if the recip had multiple prompts even? Is it negative to say which one was written for?

It's like you're writhing in agony over the possibility of this author being perceived as anything other than a gift-delivering machine.

This is someone’s gift, it seems presumptuous and a but rude to gift them something that long (and I love longfic) and also give them a bunch of research notes too.

Rude?????????

this same comment could be said of the op fic that started the tread lol

CYRT

Point. I personally wouldn't remark on a pinch hit being one of the very last pinch hits because that means the person got picked last and that isn't the nicest feeling? But they may not care and it isn't really a big deal.

Re: Trick or Treat

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
disagree, linking your own letters in the gift fic you wrote for someone and asking for fics (which comes off as asking either readers or the recip to write for them back) is much worse

+100000

Someone's being weird and wanky here, and it's not the person who wrote that author's note.

Dang are y'all really judging yuletide fics by their hits/kudos ratios?

Re: Trick or Treat

I didn't read all of these but I read some, and they were all fine. It sounds like you "read" by looking for small words or phrases that you could try to stretch to sound as wanky as possible, when they're not wanky at all. Way to read with bad faith and intentions!

If you hate listening to people talk about writing, I don't know why you're on a fandom anon meme about writing.
