Iirc I was googling how to write a good letter and ended up on some wiki which ended up mentioning coal? Maybe it was discussing a bad letter and cited coal or something?

Linked somewhere, right at the start of the old coal. Might have been the Yuletide comm or another anon meme. I used to go to a lot of them, though I never really got into FFA.

First year of original flavor Coal, someone complained in Yuletide chat about it very early on. I wandered over and never left.

It was mentioned in the yuletide comm back on LJ at some point. My first Yuletide was 2011, so probably then but maybe the year after.

I have no idea, but I know it was my first Yuletide (and my first exchange), and I was panicking about whether I was doing everything right, so I was Googling and searching DW and anywhere else that I thought I could find out more about all the unspoken rules and expectations that weren't in the FAQs.

In other words, I found coal because I was already neurotic about exchanges even before I'd ever done an exchange.
