That's fine, as an almost 100% gen writer. If your writer is so hellbent on writing gen despite your preferences, they may as well just go ODAO (which IMO would be quite impolite, they should either write you what you want in this case or default).

Personally, I typically game for gen requests. If I get a shippy one, that's not the recip's fault, it's mine. They don't owe me a gen-out.

Nah, that's bullshit. There is no social obligation to default because your recip is hellbent on getting something they can't match on, whether it's an all-shippy request, an all-AU request, or some bizarre headcanon.

*shrugs* I definitely feel the social obligation to default if I feel I positively cannot write a request. This is not always the case with me and shipfic, I've written a couple of these in my time, but if I see a shippy request and all I feel is the overwhelming disappointment that it's not gen, I default for my recip's sake as much as for mine.

I think for me it's about symmetry. I also cannot match on gen, and although my DNWs and likes strongly suggest that I am not open to shippy content, I can imagine someone skirting this if they really want to write shipfic. Personally I'd feel very annoyed at the writer in this scenario.

I don't think there is an obligation. I do think not trying your best to give your recip what they want (within reason; "Make it a MCU crossover feat. Stucky porn" etc. are not reasonable) makes you a dick.

You also aren't obligated to game, anything that starts on the premise "I can game away from it so it's fine" is not valid. Assume you will match with someone who has no idea "gaming" is a thing in Yuletide, and wouldn't have any idea how to do it if they wanted to.

+1 This is especially true in Yuletide. Gaming is not a guarantee. Tons of people don't write letters so you have no idea what they want, and even if you game by only offering fandoms where all letters are visible, you can still get matched to someone who signs up after the signup page stops updating, and you'll have no idea that you need to change your offers to game away from them. It's happened to me.
