what's the difference between the main collection and madness?

Main collection = meets all the requirements of fulfilling an assignment for the current year

Madness = shorter than 1000 words, doesn't exactly fit request per letter of the law, or in non-standard format; opens a day later.

All of what the coadie above me said, plus: if you put a treat into the main collection, it can be co-opted into a pinch hit. If you put it into the Madness collection, it can't.

what are the circumstances it would be co-opted into a pinch hit?

aka what is your advice for deciding whether something should go in the main collection or madness (assuming it does in fact follow the letter, is over 1000 words, etc)

Is it true my Treat might become someone’s main assignment? Yes, in the following circumstances.

If the person who was officially assigned to your recipient defaults at the December 18 deadline, we may check to see if they have a treat in the archive instead of sending them out to the pinch hit list. That is because of the very high volume of pinch hits late in the Yuletide season.

If we send someone out to pinch hit after the default deadline (December 11) and several days go by without a pinch hitter volunteering to write for them, we may check to see if they have a treat in the archive. (This has not happened before, as far as we know.)

If Person A defaults, and then their assigned writer defaults, we don’t send Person A out to the pinch hit list - their default means they are no longer guaranteed a gift. That means that a treat you write for Person A may be their only gift.

They're still asking? I was surprised to hear you can no longer put Yuletide Fairy stories in Madness, because that used to be a thing, but I don't get the obsession with the Yuletide Fairy. I thought it was fun and harmless, but if it's not done anymore, it's not done anymore.

1) Don't put something in the main collection unless it would work as someone's assignment.

2) Don't put something in the main collection if you absolutely, positively want your fic to be a treat instead of a pinch hit.

Also, nobody reads anything in Madness. Early on that was where treats went.

For Yuletide 2020:

signups: 1476
fics in main: 2104
fics in madness: 360, only 83 of which are at least 1000 words in length

looks like "put it in main" is far more common that "put it in madness"
