DA I am all for compensating people for labor, but this isn't about profit or not profit. We are all here doing this as a labor of love. I would hazard that a significant amount of people who do yuletide do not have the ability to pay for readers/editors/anything for their fic. Your argument essentially says that if you don't have money to pay someone, you shouldn't be writing fanfiction. That feels like a very weird take in a fandom space.

This. I've done sensitivity reading for people and I see it as another type of beta work. I've never paid for beta work or been paid for it. It's all labor of love and part of being a community.

+2 When I write professionally, I always pay my editors and sensitivity readers. For fannish writing, I look for volunteers. Do people pay their Yuletide beta’s?

I understand the request. Running into a fix that takes something personal to you and gets it painfully, egregiously wrong happens in the wild, but it would be ugly if that was a gift.

It’s not an enforceable DNW, though.

Yeah I went for pithiness over clarity.

What I should have said is that an alternative to asking a strangers of a different ethnic background to do work for free is to put the call out for a paid bigotry-picking/sensitivity reading gig on one of the discords. (Not AO3 itself, where it's against the rules.)

Not as a requirement but as an alternative option to the uncomfortable situation of asking marginalized strangers to perform free labor related to their marginalization.

I'm gonna leave it at this because I'm already acting pretty wanky and I don't want to end up spending my evening being stressed and wanky
