OP
No, but it's definitely for an RPF request -for Taskmaster New Zealand. Is this a common thing to ask in RPF fandoms? I feel so out of the loop!

Does NZ have the weird porn laws like Australia does?

No, but we are very tiny. Perhaps they are concerned that a nominated person might stumble over the fic? Because I would believe that Jeremy Wells, the presenter, googles themselves very thoroughly just for laughs.

I'd be even less surprised if one of the contestants submitted some Jeremy/Paul smut for a prize task. Something like Brynley's video call or Angella's Twitter comments book. This is the sort of fandom I'd least want my fics/requests findable for tbh.

Yes, it's custom in a lot of RPF fandoms. It makes it harder for the people the fics are about to stumble across them.

Yes, it's not unusual for smaller RPF communities to lock down completely so that they're invisible to anyone who doesn't already know what they're looking for.

If you want to keep your community locked down completely... Don't request it in a massive exchange that's known for getting attention outside the community?

If your author wants to write publicly, oh well? I mean, I have some RPF fic locked, but I chose to do that. It wasn't down to any sort of community pressure. And pretty much every RPF will eventually have someone go 'fuck it' and post publicly anyway.

Ayrt I mean even if your person does Google themself, nothing is stopping the writer from posting a link on unlocked social media after reveals (like many people do) or third parties who don't know anything about the fandom community from reccing it where it'll be found. (and look, most of the sort of people who go looking for fic of their stuff have AO3 accounts at this point anyway.)

Within some fandom communities "don't even talk about it outside lock" is standard but if you nommed it for yuletide you're the one who broke that.

If archive locking is a common custom in RPF fandom circles, but there are a lot of people who only write RPF for yuletide who wouldn't be aware of that etiquette, then I think it's a reasonable thing to bring up in a request. I still think it's ultimately the writer's decision, but archive locking a gift fic is something that just might not occur to a lot of writers without someone asking for it.
