I'm not a fan of mine but the sign-up is only a single sentence so I'm waiting for them to fix their placeholder letter before I decide for sure

I got someone who didn't get the message that worldbuilding is now a nominatable character...

So yeah, I'm definitely considering an insta-default. I'll give it a day or two to think about whether I'm comfortable with ODAO.

I mean all they want is worldbuilding, but they didn't nominate it.

Did they ask for Any? Or can you just write about the characters you offered with a bit extra in background details?

I saw a letter like this too and was like avoid avoid avoid

DC from the worldbuilding rules post: “You can also, as in previous years, request your favourite character(s) and list worldbuilding as a thing you like, or give prompts for worldbuilding. It is not mandatory to select the worldbuilding tag, when available, if you like worldbuilding stories.”

And since they didn’t match on worldbuilding, they can get ODAO just like the rest of us. You can ask for a MCU crossover too, doesn’t mean you’re going to get it.

The thing is, it's just a shit situation for both of us that this recip has created by doing it this way. I'm unhappy because I got assigned to someone who requested what I offered, but they don't actually want that, they want something else. So I have to ODAO and give them something I know very well they don't want and won't be happy with, or I have to default and risk my own chance of getting a fic written for me.

And on their end, well, they could have nominated what they wanted (worldbuilding) and requested that, and then I wouldn't have matched to them, but someone who wanted to write them worldbuilding might have! Instead they're getting ODAO fic about characters they don't care about.

Who wins here? Nobody. But hey, at least no one broke any yuletide rules!

Did they request 'any' and that's how you matched? They took the risk then that someone who offered specific characters would want to write those characters and not worldbuilding.

IDGI, worldbuilding in conjunction with characters is a really common thing to prompt for. Is there a reason you’re not answering whether they requested characters?

Lol, well first I was asleep for eight hours and then I was at work for ten hours. Sorry I didn't prioritise answering coalies' questions over those things.

I'm not sure why it makes such a difference, but here are the deets: there are two characters in the tagset for this fandom. I nominated them, I offered them. My recip requested 'Any', and didn't mention the characters in their optional details. They just talked about how much they like worldbuilding and want worldbuilding fic for the canon in question.

The point is, they just want worldbuilding. It is obviously not what I offered. They COULD have nominated and requested worldbuilding and both of us might have had a shot at a better match. I assume they didn't know they could do that. As it is, they want something I didn't offer; I'm going to write them something they don't want. Which just kind of sucks.

I'd ask the mods to ask them for prompts for those characters.

This is why that worldbuilding option sucks. Isn't there already a worldbuilding exchange anyway?

Nah, I've thought about it and decided going ODAO is my best option. I'll just write something short about the characters I offered, get it done soon and enjoy the rest of my yuletide.

Strongly considering doing so this year. My recip requested nothing but t4t and trans headcanons and I'm cis and don't want to fuck up or disappoint them by writing cis characters.

Tbh you could just write the characters as they appear in canon, tag for trans headcanons, not mention anything going on in the pants and then remove the tag in a month. #Transfem!canonciswoman and #transmasc!canoncisman or whatnot.

Bad advice, and yet...

Honestly that's probably not even bad advice, I've seen lots of fic like that by trans headcanon people. As long as you don't actively torpedo the headcanon you'd be fine.
