I think it's more telling that she also requested Lovecraft with no acknowledgement that he was a racist bag of used fake dicks with unknown provenance.

On one hand I agree, on the other hand I would hope someone who requested Lovecraft would specify "and please don't include any of the racism." Maybe they just assume no one would? But given other aspects of this letter, I don't feel confident of that in this case.

If it wasn't for the racekink, I prefer no "please don't make it racist" for Lovecraft. I dislike the presumption that because I want to write tentacle monsters I'd also write racist fic unless someone helpfully reminded me not to.

I wrote mostly pre 1960 canons and I don't expect to be warned not to write sexism and antiSemitism either, I take that as a given.

I think it's safer to err on the side of caution. Not everyone is as reasonable, and some really might need the helpful reminder.

I don't think it's necessary, but I don't think it's odd, either-- I'd see it on the same level as asking for no antisemitism in a request for The Grand Sophy. Sometimes the issues in canon are really glaring and feel weird when they're not addressed.

In neither case would I think it was odd that the letter-writer *didn't* include a more like that, but I wouldn't take it as am accusation if they did. With Lovecraft especially, there's a strong tradition of confronting/interrogating his racism so it's not unthinkable either that an author might decide to write Critical Race Lovecraft or that a recipient would want to make it clear that they don't want that.

Exactly. Unless the characters are explicitely racist/sexist and it's necessary to avoid/retcon those elements, "plz no racism" feels insulting
