Nobody nominated the women in The Nevers?

NA with no horse in this race but I always get a kick out of fandoms where the slash fans show up to get in their rare ships and the femslash fans clearly don’t care about it. It’s never the reverse where a femslash fan is the only one cares about a mainly slashy movie and I don’t know why.

DC

IIRC the m/m is also canon, while the female characters, though they are the leads and spend a lot of time together, are straight and involved with men.

And fandom always follows canon, sure.

I mean you're in a thread asking about canon gay?

...a kick? Why?

Re: Canon Recs - Canon Gay TV Shows

A lot of people I know got put off by Whedon.

da

I can't speak for the slash/femslash discrepancy, but I fully intend to finish watching the show. Uh, someday. When I have time to binge the whole thing on one month's worth of subscription. Sometime. But I also have other things to watch for femslash where there isn't tedious het, or less of it.

Re: Canon Recs - Canon Gay TV Shows

(Anonymous) 2021-10-15 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the answer. A lot of people probably did watch or will watch but aren’t fannish. Those who like canon mlm prioritized watching it and somebody liked it enough to nom. The canon/fanon wlw fans didn’t bother prioritizing because it is a show for het and mlm fans. Of course a mlm fan is going to like it enough to nominate while someone who likes wlw isn’t going to bother.

Kicking up a fuss that people like gay stuff over implied lesbian or canon het feels like ‘anything with women is inherently progressive’ eat your vegetables bullshit. Shipping isn’t activism.

Re: Canon Recs - Canon Gay TV Shows

(Anonymous) 2021-10-15 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's vegetables/shipping-as-activism, nonnie, it's reasonable to wonder why a femslashy show had only some side m/m nominated.

Wait, who's gay in Westworld? I remember Westworld being painfully straight.

(Also, is this list men only? Because if women also, Motherland: Fort Salem fits)

Charlotte Hale had sex with male and female hosts, didn't she? It's been a long time since I watched. I may have only imagined that, because I think she's hot, to be fair.

I think it was just male hosts. Elsie was implied to be a lesbian/at least kissed women. All the hosts probably had sex with everyone and there were lesbian hosts in the orgy scenes at in the Mariposa whore house obviously.

A Place to Call Home is so good. Those aren't the combination of characters I would have gone with, but I'm really excited that someone who wasn't me nominated it! I hope it gets requests, I'd love to write for it. All of the nominated characters are canonically queer, and that's not even all the queer characters on the show. It is an ensemble show, there's a lot of storylines and lots of romances, but in terms of screen time and sex scenes, the gay romances are given the same treatment as the straight ones.

(Trigger warning for conversion therapy. If anyone is actually interested in watching the show, I think it's around 50 episodes, I could do a full list of warnings, but I wanted to mention that one specifically since it's related directly to the nominated characters.)

Cherry Magic is such a cute show, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants something light-hearted and sweet to watch, even if you don't get fannish about it. It's also pretty short for a TV series - the main storyline is 12 half-hour episodes (the two special episodes are kind of their own thing) and you can watch it for free on Crunchyroll. It's live-action Japanese BL; here are what the characters look like:

Seconding the rec! It's just such a feel-good show, and adorable, and I'm definitely fannish about it.

Ghosts, the new CBS comedy. It hasn't been explicitly stated, but Isaac (who dates from the Revolutionary War) is obviously gay.

Same deal with the Captain in the original BBC Ghosts, which is also in the tagset.

The Exorcist - Angela Rance believes something is very wrong in her home. Plagued by increasingly frightening nightmares, she isn't the only one in her family suffering: her husband Henry is slowly losing his mind, while their older daughter spends all of her time locked in her room and the younger one believes she hears strange noises coming from inside the walls. Desperate, she turns to Father Tomas Ortega -- the progressive leader of their suburban Chicago parish -- setting him on a collision course with old school Vatican soldier Father Marcus Brennan, as all their fates become entangled in a battle against an ancient force of evil.

This is an excellent rec, but I'm not sure where you pulled this summary from, since "Marcus Brennan" is an incorrect name from a miscommunication or early draft (and even so, not the earliest: the online version of the pilot script said "Marcus Lang".) The character's name is Father Marcus Keane, and he is bisexual with a male love interest named Peter Osborne, and a very slashy relationship with Father Tomas Ortega. All three of those characters are in the tagset.

Here's a gif of Marcus kissing Peter:

And of Tomas and Marcus being close enough to kiss:

(The show also has canonical lesbian characters, Kat Rance and Verity, though they're not in the tagset this year. They appear in different seasons and do not meet in-universe, although there's some fic slashing them on AO3.)

The New Normal - A single parent, Goldie, moves to LA with her daughter and becomes a surrogate mother for a gay couple, David and Bryan. This eventually leads to a blended and unique family unit.
