Oh god that sounds awful

+1

If anything, it's even more likely to happen with later pinch hits, since most people are more likely to give a shit about reveals possibly being held up than requests not being visible for a little while longer.

Gross. I’m so sorry. Can you dash something off and immediately put it in the anon collection?

There are plenty of people who are confident they can come up with an workable idea for a reasonably good prompt for any canon, coalie. I can come up with fifteen ideas on command after any movie or book; the problem is making it stop. I need exchanges to narrow down what I'm going to write long enough do actually do it, not come up with ideas. I suspect a lot of the people who take this kind of pinch hit are in my boat.

Also, I really don't think anyone who picked one up today can be said to be doing it "in haste".

+1 letters are so boring; they're my least favorite part of exchange culture.

neither I nor my recip wrote a letter this year, and I am very pleased by both of those things!

there are two letters in the app for one of my offered fandoms. Mine says "I know a lot of the fanfic does X with this canon, and I like it, but I would like to read the opposite of X this year".

The other one says "I know a lot of the fanfic does the opposite of X with the canon, and I like it, but I would like to read X this year".

I really hope we matched on the correct writers and not backward!

Which one is right?

They both are? It's not zero-sum.

+1 some people might know they realistically can only get a few (well-written & beta-ed) treats done so they want to look at all the requests for their fandom so they can decide which to do/prioritize

ayrt

I don't even think it's a shitty modding choice, I get why they're doing it. Still frustrated that we can't see the requests and sad for the IPHs lingering. So I'm wanking on coal.

+1 best case scenario is that multiple people consume the canon and at least one or two actually gets into it and can write for it next year lol

yeah we're pretty awesome

Huh? A lot of things being X does not make it impossible for a lot of things to also be not X.

A lot of yuletide participants are on coal. Also, a lot of yuletide participants are not on coal. These are both true statements.

Oh, God, this happened to me once. I knew up front that my chances of pleasing my recip were vanishingly small. I psyched myself into it by divorcing the prompts/DNWs from my recip's identity. My advice to you is to respect their DNWs, consider using one of their prompts, but write the fic for someone else--yourself, someone else you know in the fandom, an unknown person who will stumble across your fic at some point in the future.

It's a gut punch when this sort of thing happens, but it can also be freeing. Good luck.

Oh wow, that's a really rough deal. Your writing is better than the way that makes you feel!

Do you have anyone you can talk to in the fandom who can cheer you on specifically?

pinch that cottontail

Re: Four IPHs left

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
To me, that's lumped in with person would earnestly claimed the PH and then realized they couldn't manage it--good intentions, unfortunate outcome.

Re: Four IPHs left

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Seems more likely someone will sock up to claim and then default on it within a week/right after all reveals go live than actual hold on to the PH for the full writing duration/actually turn something in.

Re: Four IPHs left

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
This. And in the absence of any information about some of those requests, I'm going to be more conservative about claiming PHs. Ironically, keeping the requests hidden makes me less likely to grab an IPH.

We know it's not new. Just arbitrary and unreasonable.
