I checked the everything app already, but there's at least one other new requester this year.

My sympathies, coalie. Are there canons (not necessarily YT-sized) with a similar feel that you could crib ideas from?

OC Yes, that is what I meant.

A lot of people also like big writing projects for the year and Triple Crown lets you do that while writing different fics, plus there's prizes and stuff. It seems like more of a community now that Yuletide is so big.

To be fair, I can totally understand why they want their author to get a Genthen sensitive reader. Unisex people are so gross and weird about kemmer. I mean, did you read those excerpts from the first Envoy's journal that got published a while back? And that was a trained diplomat!

CYRT I agree. I don't think it's a big problem as of yet, but it's definitely getting there.

It was bound to happen once they made requests visible at all.

If you don't like seeing it, you could try starting another thread. If it's more interesting than this, people will glom on to it. "Stop talking about this!" is an historically poor way of directing conversation.

Re: Four IPHs left

(Anonymous) 2021-10-26 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really! The only other nommed fandom with a vaguely similar setup didn't get any requests. But just dancing around in coal like I have to pee until the door opens will work too.

How would *offering* at least one thing you didn't nominate help with IPHs? In the most extreme case, you just end up with everyone adding a five minute fandom and still have as many pinch hits as before.

It is! Okay I got an epub that seems usable, if it's still unclaimed by the time I get off shift tonight I'll read the book and claim. It has a "Guide to Cyberspeak" in the back just in case you don't know what FOAD or EYHO means, it's adorable.

I feel like they should just release all the requests. At this point, not publishing all the requests isn't going to do anything except encourage people who are not familiar with the canon to take the lingering IPHs just to hurry up the requests reveals and that's no good for anyone. I'm sure some one will pick up the IPHs later down the line

Re: Four IPHs left

Well, like I said, it wouldn't help with the ones like all-yugoslavia or giant-pile-of-hard-games person. But the full round of IPHs included a lot of stuff that wasn't actually super obscure, and was reasonably likely to have been the kind of stuff someone might have thrown in if they'd had to, like Snowpiercer or Transmetropolitan or Sharpe (or Murderbot.) But if there's a bunch of noms sitting around that nobody's planning to request, they soak up a bunch of offers that the stuff people actually want then don't get. Plus, of course, if people are nomming 6+ things themselves and only request those, they're less likely to add something that somebody else nommed that would make them more matchable.

No sock noms wouldn't magically solve it, but real participants offering and requesting other real participants' offers and requests are what makes the wheels turn, and the more fake noms you get the creakier it is.

Yes!

Agreed.

Re: Four IPHs left

(Anonymous) 2021-10-26 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not understand why it's so urgent to see requests immediately.

You have your assignment and letters in the letter app, you can start in on writing and treating those anyway.

Re: Four IPHs left

(Anonymous) 2021-10-26 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree. If I were one of the lingering pinch hits with a canon that will take time to consume, I would rather all of the requests be revealed now and be picked up whenever someone was ready to pick up my pinch hit. I wouldn't want to receive something dashed off just to reveal requests.

Re: Four IPHs left

(Anonymous) 2021-10-26 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Holding back on the requests summary doesn't make it more likely that I'll bid on one of those IPHs. It just makes it more likely that I'll go look for a treat or pinch hits elsewhere and be too busy by the time requests are revealed to write a treat. In two of my past five YTs, stories I originally began as treats were eventually posted as fills for PHs, so from my perspective, keeping the requests unrevealed reduces the chance that I'll supply a PH later while not increasing the chance that I'll take an IPH now.

Why would the fic be dashed off? IPHs have the same deadline as all the other ones.

You're an excellent coalie! <33

Re: let's play: DNW WTF

But if you write fic from his POV... isn't getting a sensitivity reader going to make him OOC?

Re: Four IPHs left

(Anonymous) 2021-10-26 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the coalie above means they'll write kittyfic

Re: Four IPHs left

(Anonymous) 2021-10-26 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You're already not supposed to nom with socks, and mods have absolutely no way to enforce that. What exactly do you propose?

Re: let's play: DNW WTF

(Anonymous) 2021-10-26 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I want a fic from the POV of Genly's Gethenian sensitivity reader.

DC

First stupid idea to come to mind is "nominating pledges you to sign up with the AO3 account you used to nominate". Runs into problems as soon as anybody has good reasons not to sign up, e.g. unexpected RL issues that mean you can't dedicate time to writing a gift, but it's a thought.

Turn a profit? This is Yuletide. No one's turning a profit here.
