tbh this is very mild complaining, but if I was their recip, I'd hate for my writer to go "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh" at the idea of writing for me/my prompts. Especially when other people are posting about how excited and happy they are about their own assignments.

It's certainly not explicit, but if that PH is still there 24 hours from now, I'd ask. Usually the IPHs go very quickly, but if it's something obscure, perhaps it won't.

What's with the participants who had their signups deleted because they are from the same household? They keep making posts to get the mod's attention (their first one was deleted) and they seem genuine and not a troll/sock so it's really weird.

NAYRT but you can search all of DW for entries that contain Yuletide. That used to be (and still is) how people would find letters not listed at the letters post, especially when all requests didn’t get revealed for months.

DC from the worldbuilding rules post: “You can also, as in previous years, request your favourite character(s) and list worldbuilding as a thing you like, or give prompts for worldbuilding. It is not mandatory to select the worldbuilding tag, when available, if you like worldbuilding stories.”

And since they didn’t match on worldbuilding, they can get ODAO just like the rest of us. You can ask for a MCU crossover too, doesn’t mean you’re going to get it.

The thing is, it's just a shit situation for both of us that this recip has created by doing it this way. I'm unhappy because I got assigned to someone who requested what I offered, but they don't actually want that, they want something else. So I have to ODAO and give them something I know very well they don't want and won't be happy with, or I have to default and risk my own chance of getting a fic written for me.

And on their end, well, they could have nominated what they wanted (worldbuilding) and requested that, and then I wouldn't have matched to them, but someone who wanted to write them worldbuilding might have! Instead they're getting ODAO fic about characters they don't care about.

Who wins here? Nobody. But hey, at least no one broke any yuletide rules!

Unless you are beholden to the idea that upon reading your work the recip cannot know it's you, I'd suggest writing the thing you know they'll like. If you think that's what will give them the most joy, you should give them that. As long as you can keep it a secret until author reveals (or they come to you first). The real spirit of Yuletide is giving your recip the thing you think they will like the most that is within your capacity to write.

Would it spoil things for them if they recognized your during the anon period? If not, I'd take a week to see if you can't come up with a general idea they'd like as well as the thing you talked about before diving into the give-away idea.

+1 The anon rule is mostly about the writing period. You could be what you think is a total stranger to them and they could still guess you were their author after reading the fic. That's out of your control. Keep mum while you're writing and then enjoy the (hopefully private) OMG IT WAS YOU convo once they finish reading the thing.

(Also - they may end up being upset if you write them something generic when you knew what they wanted in their heart of hearts. I really doubt 7 days worth of not knowing its you is more important to them than getting a fic they really want, especially after they had 3 months of you keeping it a secret.)
