This is absolutely not true. I have never done this. I go by what they say in optional details or their letter, if it's easily available I might look at letters they've written for other exchanges, and I may look at the tags and summaries of fic they've written, but that's it.

I've been doing yuletide for years, and the only time I did this was when I got a blank signup and was attempting to find out a little more about the recipient's general tastes.

Every other time I've taken their letters at face value, because I know that what you ask to get for yuletide is not necessarily the same as what you tend to write, or what you've bookmarked, or what you like in a completely different fandom, or what you liked last year before a real life incident left a bad taste for Y in your mouth, or what a friend gifted you in a different exchange when they knew they could write X in the one way that wouldn't squick you.

Not that the other letters in my fadoms were trash, it's just that I matched with this person on 2 fandoms and I like having choices.

Incomplete letter, previous letters that made me suspect I wouldn’t get along with them, and a complete id mismatch. Well, guess we’ll see. At least I love the fandom.

I'm cracking up--I've matched with a friend, and there's multiple prompts that we've discussed enough that I know EXACTLY what they would want! Plus I was intending on treating them anyway, so that means one less fic to write; but, that said, I've picked up pinch hits for them in multiple previous exchanges, so I hope they're not sick of me yet :(

Say, hypothetically, I got a letter with very little in the way of prompts for a perpetual Yuletide fandom. How do I access previous years' prompts again?

I got a previous recip and we matched on the same two fandoms! Different characters for both, but the prompts are very similar and they left really nice comments on my last fics, so I have a solid idea of the vibes they enjoy and both fandoms are Yuletide staples for me, so I'm already outlining ideas.

Oh wow, I offered this in a last-minute fit of extra offers because "but I want to be surpriiiiiiised" and I barely remembered I had. A fun stretch fandom that's not in my wheelhouse but I loved the letter and I got it.

I may hate myself for this but for right now I'm excited!

I matched with this user on 2 fandoms and they also requested another I feel comfortable with. But they only have DNWs how am I supposed to decide what to write!!!

Look at past versions of the app/use the universal version of the app to search across exchanges or just open up past rounds of Yuletide on AO3 and go looking through the requests summary?

Yikes. Aside from everything else, is it even okay to DNW the canon setting completely? Can you be banned for not following that DNW? There's very little to those characters outside of it.

The yuletide_admin comm kind of sucks at consistent tagging from one year to the next, but between them these tags seem have most of the posts where they linked the lists of prompts in previous years:

The letter just repeats the brief prompts from the sign-up, but I know what they want and the canon review will be a lot of fun. Score!

There's no way mods would enforce that as a DNW, though I think it would be best to alert the mods at the start in a situation like that rather than waiting for recip to complain after reveals.
