She insists the bottom be older, too.

It's an interesting juxtaposition of the unorthodox and the conventional.

I'm going to go against majority opinion here and say that DNW may be completely reasonable and easy to interpret... depending on which book fandoms you nominated.

If it was Susanna Clarke and Victor Hugo I know exactly what you mean and what you don't want me to write. If it was Diana Wynne Jones and Balzac I wouldn't have a clue, and I'd have to game away from you to avoid it. So the value of this DNW is really contingent on what you're trying to apply it to.

That really depends on how tight your third is.

Yuletide challenges

(Anonymous) 2021-10-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone thinking of doing any of the mini challenges this round, and what might you hope to create if you do?

I'll almost certainly be qualifying for Misses Claus and Femslash Festivus, as I'm offering a LOT of f/f leaning canons.

Ayrt

I guess here we return to the question of whether or not the writer who gets that prompt feels like they have a voice. Because if you don't, a DNW like that is super intimidating.

DA

With Susanne Clarke it'd be easy enough to avoid footnotes but other than that I'd be quite lost, to be honest. Her writing has a bit of an old fashioned feel to it, I guess, so I could try to write in a style that is pointedly modern (even though that would feel unnatural for the canon)? Somehow I doubt that would make the recip happy though.

I suspect that a DNW like that is easier to deal with if you're a better writer than I am.

JS&MN reads to me like a very specific pastiche of Jane Austen. So, if I matched on that fandom and got that DNW, I’d probably aim to write like an early 20th century English writer. Like, I’d have someone in my mind I was secretly doing a pastiche of —- someone who isn’t Jane Austen or another Regency/Early Victorian writer.

If I got that DNW for Piranesi, I would write from the POV of someone other than the main narrator — just anyone from the regular world who had not had amnesia. Even if the only character get requested was the main narrator, I’d find a way to get at the prompts from an outsider POV, because I don’t know how else to deal with the DNW.

Even a full omniscient third should have some distinctive voice to it that varies with the needs of the story, if you're doing it right.

Like I'm not saying the writer's developed style is irrelevant, but if the narrative voice is blandly identical in everything you write, rather than being part of how you build the story, that's not. Good?

I like merging the crueltide and yuleporn requests (unhealthy ships) so I’m always happen when I see someone signed up for both. I usually get into new fandoms for good Crueltide prompts.

I'll be doing Yulebuilding no matter what. All my offers have significant worldbuilding involved.

na

I don’t read or request book fandoms so I’m talking about live action media here, but my nightmare is reading a fic where it “sounds” like the author and not the character. I like a tight 3rd POV where the narrator sounds like the POV character and not an omnipotent author (unless the narrator is omnipotent in canon). When the narration is goofy and the POV character is stoic, I hate it. When the narration is scientific and the POV character is an idiot, I hate it.

For example, JS&MN show fic that is written in the the style of the books feel so tedious to me. Ones that match the tone of the show and fit the character’s rather than the author’s voice are amazing.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I don’t want pistache but I do want it to fit the voice/tone of canon. I can remove that canon tone from my narration and write generic there, but if someone gifted that to me I would assume they had no grasp on the canon or characters rather than it being a “stylistic choice” and I view authors who write in the same style despite fandom to be ATG(uys/gals) migratory lowest common denominator tbh.
