1. On-point formatting! I think I get that bingo square. I like your prompts, it's enough to get a good idea of what you'd like.

2. Generally good, but wow it's pretty obvious which part of the letter got the least thought. I doubt I'd pick up the Star Wars prompt for a treat or pinch but if I matched on it, it'd be fine.

3. I like the general likes section. Formatting-wise, it's really hard to scan down, it wouldn't hurt to have some bolding or header tags or different spacing or something.

Also if you really do want the female pilots most, you might want to Wedge and Wes off your signup. It's not OR matching, it's AND, and I doubt you'll match any offers other than ANY with that set of four.

4. More great formatting! I like the likes section. The fandom specific prompt is fine, though it's basically just saying you want something like canon (which is fine if that's what you want! If you want anything else it could use some punching up.)

Canon-blind review:

ceruleantactician: Nicely formatted, I appreciate the jumplinks that go both up and down, and the letter is very reasonable all around. 4/5

ermingarden: Please include AO3 name! I appreciate the DNW clarifications. Letter is enthusiastic and happy, though as a writer I'd probably be even happier with slightly more content, but that's just for inspiration's sake. 3.5/5

shihadchick: initial impression was just not enough formatting. I don't need fancy headings or jumps, but a little more bold/underline would be helpful. Italics don't stand out as much to me personally. Or use the horizontal rules to split fandoms instead of sort of just at the top and bottom maybe. AO3 name, please! The "Summary" sections are clearly unfinished, too. Not sure how I feel about the enthusiastic Any request and clearly understanding what that entails but then the pretty bald "I would prefer fic focusing on the women pilots this year." Honesty is great and we all have our preferences, but if I were offering a non-woman pilot I'd probably be a bit D:. Disguise the enthusiasm in the prompts or choose female characters and give an OR out, maybe? 2.5/5

weakinteraction: ODAO out is nice to have top and centre, lots of meaty prompts and general likes, what's not to like. Star Wars prompt in specific is a little light on specific prompts, but I can jam that sometimes you only know the vague shape of what you want, and there are certainly more details in the linked letter. 4/5

cyrt

It's why I'm hoping we have info for 2019- I think the signup period was more similar to this year's than last year's. (And 2020 did have a small bump of participants compared to 2019.)

How do people do links to headings in their letter?

Letter lenght

(Anonymous) 2021-10-19 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I just saw that my letter is longer than 1k. How did that happen? I've always though of myself as one of those short letter people (and been sad about, I love long letters but felt like I didn't have it in me to write one). I mean, it's still not anywhere as long as some, but I guess I really can't consider it short anymore, either?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-19 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Here, have some copypasta for letters: https://pastebin.com/RCNKgvjq

tl;dr use HTML a tags with the appropriate properties; name="NAME_OF_JUMP" with no content in the tag to create the place that users hope to, href="#NAME_OF_JUMP" on the tag that people click on.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-19 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If you put in cut tags, you can then go back and edit in links directly to the cut tags elsewhere in the entry - that's the simplest, especially if you're already using cuts. (This will work even if you're in a view that hides the cuts.)

There are other ways that don't require cut tags but apparently the one I know best is "bad html" now so fine.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-19 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
At the end of the day, Dreamwidth uses the same non-HTML5 "id" property so don't let the haters get you down, coalie, you just gotta do you and wait for DW to catch up.

finkpishnets: small letter with just a generic list of likes, but hey, it exists. 2.5/5

christycorr: requester knows what they want, but manages to give a gen out without making it feel forced. hooray! good formatting, useful links, very nice overall

sonni89: ao3 name being riiiiight at the bottom is a little unintuitive for me. that said, formatting's good (though where the Mega Indent comes from I have no idea) and the ENTHUSIASM!!! is there alongside a nice list of prompts.

themardia: initially afraid of tumblr link, but one of the most readable tumblrs i've ever been on. no ao3 name D: OR out clearly stated, so that's good, and meaty prompts for each of the pairings they put out there. depending on who i was offering i might feel more or less excited by the combinations presented, but not a canon i know so i can't say more.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-19 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was mostly annoyed that meant there were no easy tutorials I could link to without trying to post escaped code on my phone. I'm glad you got there!

(Anonymous) 2021-10-19 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people do really elaborate coding and I am in awe. I just do simple jumps because I want to make it easier for people but I don't know or have a lot of time to mess around with fancier coding.

What I do:

Intro
Html for Fandom Jumps
General Likes and DNWs
Fandom section 1 (ends with a "return to top" jump)
Fandom section 2 (ends with a "return to top" jump)
Fandom section 3 (ends with a "return to top" jump)
Signoff

And how I do the html is:

Each one of the fandom sections is set up under a different lj cut. Then for the fandom jumps html, I put:

<*a href="cutlink1address"*> (update the cut link for each section)

And for the back to top html, I put:

<*a href="letterlink">

(Take out asterisks, of course, those are in there to make it display in this comment properly)

Elaborate coding is cool and all, but clear and readable is really the important part- it doesn't need to be fancy.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-19 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't participants peak at like 2300? We've dropped over 30% from that and the exchange seems to be functioning fine.

na

God's Own Country is in no way non-canon m/m

(Anonymous) 2021-10-19 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I think 1959 participants in 2012 is the high water mark. I don't think Yuletide has ever cracked 2000 and it stayed that way once drop-outs/duplicates/people without recips/people with bans were taken out of the initial post-closing number.

Are there no possible alternative ships someone might want fic for?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-19 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
And if you want fancy coding for clear readability, using html header tags -

<h1>like this</h1>

<h4>or this</h4>

can actually be better because things like screenreaders, autosummaries, and keyboard controls can parse them.
