I say just leave it to fandoms but if people want the first shipfic/characterfic I don't have a big problem wiht it.

But the coalies in coaltide, the tall and the small,
Were talking without any yule wank at all!

And the Coalie, their coal feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling. "How could it be so?

It came without discourse! It came without trolls!
It came without sockpuppets, Nazis, or coal!"

They puzzled and puzzled till their puzzler was sore.
Then the Coalie thought something they hadn't before.

Maybe Yuletide, they thought, with their comment form blank,
Maybe Yuletide, perhaps, is about more than wank!

And what happened then? Well, in Coaltide they say
That the Coalie's small heart grew three sizes that day!

Yes, the phrasing you use habitually will usually sound correct to you. Doesn't mean other regional dialects are wrong or silly.

It looks like my gift for my recip is going to be in the 40-50k range. I didn't outline it with specific chapters in mind but I could probably find some natural breaks. Would you like it posted as just a long one shot or break it up into chapters? What will make reading easier/more enjoyable?

Chapters, 110%. Chapters are more readable and decrease the chance of me staying up late/missing meals/being late to work etc. I would also comment on every chapter, while that part of the story is fresh in my mind!

I would download it as an epub so it wouldn’t matter to me, however if you put chapters then I will give you a comment at the end of every chapter as I work through them, which will speed up your rate of feedback from me.

If there aren’t chapters, I will still give you multiple comments (probably not as many as if you made 10-15 chapters) but you’re not going to get them until after I finish the entire fic. I will probably give you a placeholder comment so you know I’m happy to have gotten a fic that long though.

Cute.

Re: Weirdest comment you've seen on a Yuletide fic

(Anonymous) 2021-11-04 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I once got a comment on a YT fic from someone who, as part of a reading challenge they were taking part in, was required to read a piece of fanfiction based on a book they had read. This reader was very clear about the fact that they HATE fanfiction. But they found my story and actually liked it. They thought I should get published and stop wasting my writing talent.

I suppose, if I tilt my head and squint, that's a compliment.

Oh good, we few, proud 2005 coalies were the lucky ones. How weird.

Even (a) understanding the dev POV and (b) being into yuletide, it sometimes felt to me like astolat was playing favorites.
