That was why I was pushing for slightly more plausible deniability than a Rickroll. But coal has spoken.

Using a one or two word title is probably still reasonably anon?

My hot take is that non-english fandoms should have translated or transliterated titles in English characters, and be in their original titles in their original alphabet when browsing in that language, instead of this revolting pipe business that makes non-english fandom names into horrendous eyesores. And that transliterations to English should not include diacritics, which make it impossible to search within said fandom from a standard English keyboard.

To be fair, Africa or the Baby Shark song are almost just as obvious

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The be fair, baby shark is way more obvious, and when voting for songs I actually went and checked the lyrics for songs with reasonably versatile title options and rickroll genuinely isn't that bad. Except, you know, in combination.

but coalies , the goal is to browse the collection and go "MY PEOPLEEEEEEEE"

Isn't that the whole point?

I don't get super mad about well-behaved socks but I will say that as a participant even well-behaved socks can be frustrating.

-if you match on one it can be frustrating to have nothing at all but a letter and maybe a few other gifts. I'm not even someone who stalks recips, but I'm going to read certain things in you letter differently if you're an experienced active fan vs. a newb who just stopped lurking. If I can tell.

-also if you match with a probably-sock anonymity is harder? I sometimes post writing updates to a small locked group, but I know some of them sock up for yt, so I feel like I can't even freely, like, ask for a canon beta unless I know whose sock it is.

-if i get a gift fic and it's the best thing I've ever read, I want to go find the rest of your stuff too :(

-if I get a gift fic and it's coal, I'm going to slant my comment differently if it's a newb doing their best vs. someone's lazy sock. If I can tell

Like most of those would go away if people could just sign up twice, and they don't apply to long-standing, well-worn socks, but it's still always a letdown to check in on a participant and see ... blank space.

I feel like Africa has more options for lyrics you could pull where people wouldn'r immediately clock it as song lyrics. And also it's at least slightly possible people would use it non-ironically.

Baby shark is obviously worse than all the other options but Sandstorm. :P

(I am the coalie who brought up Rickroll in the first place though so I do realize this is my own fault.)

bun bun loving coalie is disappointed no one wanted to use 'white rabbit'

Re: your ideal gifts

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my fave but by the time I had a chance to vote the winner was clear (two of my favorite fics are titled "white rabbit")

I don't know anything about coding, but the current wrangling time for tags seems crazy to me. Could new tags not be automated and then walked back if needed by a human?

Re: your ideal gifts

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
you have good taste, fellow bun bun coalie!

Re: hot takes ao3 edition

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no automation at all for AO3 wrangling. It's all human based and it would take a complete rewriting of the entire meta/tag structure to facilitate that.

More people signing up to become wranglers is the main way to handle that. I think there's like maybe less than 200 active wranglers at any given time. Some fandoms get like 1k tags a month. Wranglers get to choose what fandom they work on so usually for small fandoms a mod will wrangle it right when it's first created and then it isn't touched again unless someone submits a ticket or someone new joins the wrangling team and picks it up as a passion project.

Spirited Away feels like a perennial fandom inclusion for Yuletide.

Re: hot takes ao3 edition

(Anonymous) 2021-11-03 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of tags are you talking about?

Tags in active fandoms generally wrangle fast.
Tags in unwatched fandoms can take awhile, but those are usually small enough it's not really needed.
New fandom tags are pretty fast unless they're tricky, and automation wouldn't solve tricky cases.

Non-fandom tags are never because we don't have a set of guidelines for them and nobody can agree on how to make more. That's also not solvable by automation.

(Basically, people power is not the bottleneck here, we have to turn volunteers away, it's project management.)

DA I love that name and I just want to say that coal has been on point in coming up with challenge names this year. Great work team.

Yeah, I get treats on the regular, I don't really need to sock it up for more gifts. My sock is altruistic!

+1 I love the challenges and this year has been awesome! Yay coal!

Re: your ideal gifts

might fuck around and title my fic "grandma shark" anyway

When I started writing fic and had exactly two fics to my name, I signed up for Yuletide and people assumed I was a sock. I wasn't; I just had no previous fandom presence. However, I've been writing since I was a kid and I'd been reading fic for a few years, so I didn't come off all wide-eyed. I don't think there's ever a good way of sussing this out. Coal is coal. Be mean or don't be mean. You don't really need to develop... tiers of response??

Look some of us are neurotic about comments that's just how it is?
