You could try offering what would otherwise be helpful if unsolicited advice without the intentional side salad of condescension inherent in that ellipsis. Would you like some tips on how to do that? Because I'm happy to give advice, too.

I'm a lazy procrastinator, it's true. My recips and treat recipients seem to like their fics, though, so I do have that to keep me warm in the face of your cold judgment.

+1

I don't think there is an obligation. I do think not trying your best to give your recip what they want (within reason; "Make it a MCU crossover feat. Stucky porn" etc. are not reasonable) makes you a dick.

I don't really judge people for it if they're producing good work. I just get really uncomfortable every time I hear about somebody doing it. I am absolutely the sort to have a stress meltdown if I don't have a wide buffer between myself and a deadline, and the thought of having the scramble to edit a fic post-deadline gives me second-hand anxiety.

The trouble is, when I start early I believe the fic I'm writing will be 5K, and budget my time accordingly. I don't discover its irrepressible need to be 20K until 5K of it has already been written.

Since I am capable of writing 5K fics (the second fic will be 5K!) it always seems to me that I could simply write a 5K fic on the first try for the next exchange. This apparently is not true, but it feels so illogical that I can never convince myself of it.

Coalie, I haven't managed to change my habits in the past 40+ years, despite trying. If anything, my procrastination gets worse the older I get. "Try learning to do that" =/= "you'll be able to do it".

I mean, you could try learning to be less judgemental, but clearly it's also not working out for you, so you probably know how it goes.

Someone to nominate and then request Kingdom (the Korean historical zombie show).

Oh, excellent! Thanks for the links.

Re: let's play: DNW WTF

DNW: dead dove

Sure, it's terribly phrased, but in most signups, I would have a guess as to what this means: noncon, kinks the poster considers extreme, really dark takes on tropes that could go either way.

But in this case, the likes are:

"I am fine with any rating but my faves are the M and E stuff! Fine with lots of Problematic Shit TM like dubcon, cnc, darkfic, but do not need them to be happy. I enjoy humor, unreliable narrators, genrebending, angst, Big Feelings in general."

They specifically say that it's a non-exhaustive list of Problematic Shitâ„¢.

I have no idea if it's the majority of people, but I do see a lot of people in exchange circles who say that a major reason why they do exchanges is because they'll never finish writing anything unless there's a deadline.

I personally don't procrastinate because I'm not a fast enough writer to reliably turn out a decent fic if I don't start early. But I 100% do need the pressure of a deadline.

Re: let's play: DNW WTF

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Huh!

I've been in at least one fandom where "dead dove do not eat" only got applied to graphic depictions of gore, amputation and limb loss, on-screen snuff, and one other thing I'm forgetting -- but this person's DNW does not give me that vibe. The phrasing gives me "things that tumblr/twitter/antis have decided are Problematic" vibes instead, and I'm not sure what all is on that list now.

Re: let's play: DNW WTF

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Maybe they just literally mean they don't want you to put the "dead dove" tag on the fic? Like, write whatever, but don't use that tag?

Re: let's play: DNW WTF

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
SC Honestly I would check through the mods, firstly to find out what they are actually DNWing, and secondly to maybe clue them in that their DNW makes no sense/"dead dove" doesn't mean whatever they think it means.

I would have loved to write Boyfriend Dungeon but the only prompt was for the one character I hate.

Re: Preference rating game! - BBC Ghosts

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Would treat:

borderparasol - Any. They have specific mentions of their favorite things in the show (which are also some of mine) and some good gen prompts. Would treat.

Chocolatepot - Thomas and The Captain. No list of likes or DNWs, but their requests kind of negate the need for them. They give a couple of general ideas but they're pretty good ones. Possibly!

Maybe:

The_Plaid_Slytherin - The Captain and Lieutenant Havers. They really want Cap/Havers shipfic, with a few prompts listed.

rythyme (pugglemuggle) - Mike, Alison and The Captain. They give sone pretty general prompts for Mike interacting with ghosts, Captain & Kitty, Captain/Havers, but nothing for Alison or these three together. I'm not sure they understand 'and' matching, but it probably doesn't matter if their author doesn't care. Seems like they'd be easy to write something for based on their ideas.

SoVeryAverageMe - Mike. Several prompts about Mike and whomever the writer wants to include. I love how much they love Mike and the show.

abbichicken - Mike and Alison. They're very open to anything involving Alison and Mike and even the ghosts with them, but there aren't any prompts to speak of, and I prefer some ideas. They seem very easygoing.

qkind - Mary. A few decent prompts.

scintilla10 - Kitty and Mary. Some nice ideas for both or Mary doing other things.

Probably not

croissantkatie - Any. No real prompts, vague suggestion or two. Happy with anything. They seem nice, but I prefer prompts.

IsolatedPhenomenon - Any. Happy with anything, no real prompts. A lot of that with this fandom, which I get. I love all of it, too! But I probably wouldn't treat without more to go on.

Odalyn - Mary and Mike. Intriguing, and they seem to want comedy, maybe some fluffy bonding between them somehow. Nothing wrong with their request, but it doesn't appeal to me personally to write. I'd read it, though!

Nope

Small_Hobbit - Any. A couple of super vague ideas and no character mentions at all.

Sixthlight - Alison, Kitty and Robin. A few vague ideas, open to other characters or only some they requested, but no Thomas because he's a creep and they hate him.

ThebanSacredBand - Any. No details, just give me all the ghosts. I appreciate their enthusiasm, but this isn't enough.

Tibby - Any. They do list some ships they like and some friendship and character combos, but no propmts and the letter's locked.

couldaughter - Pat, Mary, The Captain and Kitty. No info in the signup or letter link. Just blank. Oh, how could you request that combination of characters and not say anything? No way (but if there'd been a single prompt, that's a great selection.)

I requested it last year but no one wrote it for me :(

same boat coalie, I did receive a list of DNWs but I can do very little with them. hope both our recips update their letters soon!

Same :( maybe what I should do is start requesting it outside Yuletide, get people warmed up to it.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
The thing you say is "Thank you! I love it!" and you're done.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
It was. I wrote treats and swapped authorship to that account a lot.

Re: Yuletide TYWAU

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I know someone who posts a find and replace copy of one of her other fics prior to deadline and does all her writing between deadline and reveals. The fics aren't awful but you can see the places where the stories could have been much better if she'd bothered to spend any time editing them after she finished writing instead of waiting until Christmas Eve to post the real fic. Every damn year. She's not a bad writer, but her recipients deserve better and she screws them out of the better gifts she could give them just because she's lazy af.

You....could try learning.

Thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart thank you for this entirely new information that I have never had suggested to me or considered before in my entire decades long existence as a student, employee, hobbyist writer, and human being.

The trick is to embrace the hard work of changing your habits instead of moping about the consequences of those bad habits.

Sure thing Mx Every teacher who ever told a kid they could accomplish so much if they just applied themselves
