Two of my recip's DNW clash with the fandom we matched on and their prompt, but I didn't go to the mods with it. The DNW list is obviously copy-pasted between requests; I'm just assuming they don't apply there, otherwise the assignment wouldn't be doable.

But on the off-chance that you're my recip, it's possible a potential treater asked?

Dunno, but it's not relevant. Be glad you have the opportunity to reconcile your DNWs this early in the writing period, instead of being wanked about after reveals.

A NFL RPF request not involving Pat Mahomes. Would’ve been happy to write any of the other nominated characters but alas :(

That is quite bad, but at this point I reckon you may as well move on. As a writer I'm not sure I'd even want a comment at this point (provided that I'm still, you know, alive and in fandom 16 years later...)

I once got a comment redeeming a placeholder like two months after the exchange and I didn't even enjoy it anymore. The wait kinda spoiled it for me.

it's never too late, coalie!

I need to look at who the nommed characters are, but I am planning to stick it in my Partridge in a Pear Tree comment! I love the fandom :)

It isn't an enforceable DNW in Yuletide, and you should probably do other exchanges if getting a gen ODAO would absolutely ruin your experience, but I think it's reasonable to want shipfic above everything else and to say as much in your letter, outside the DNW section. I think it's only good manners to honour such a preference and the vast majority of writers will be happy to do so regardless of their personal tastes.

Coalie, go ahead and comment. Maybe your writer is no longer in fandom, or maybe they don't care anymore, but if it's bothering you, leave the comment and then you never have to think about it again.

at least you left a placeholder. some people don't even bother!

Post-deadline on a pinch hit, or "post-deadline" on a work you uploaded a placeholder for? Because one's judgment-worthy and the other isn't.

Earthsea and Sandkings. Not sure I could have written for either of them, but I was intrigued enough to be waiting to see what the requests looked like.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
probably worth going to the mods about now just so the mods don't go to you when they check your fic. Even if it's common sense they probably have to enforce the dnws. Would suck to have your recip out to pinch hit at the deadline when you'd written them a good fic.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the mods are using "another" in opposition to you. They're saying, "Hello Yuletide participant, we have a question from your fellow Yuletide participant."

Ayrt

Yeah, I've done Yuletide since year two and I've never once received something that wasn't shippy. It probably helps that I interpret shipfic very generously, and that my letter is very enthusiastic about what I like.

To be honest, any complete ODAO (by which I don't mean ignoring my prompts, which is perfectly fine, but going against the gist of my preferences) would ruin my exchange - but that hasn't happened to me in 50+ exchanges. Not even the socktopus managed to do fuck up that badly!

This sin is definitely not a behavior I'd recommend and I hope I never find myself in the same situation.

A few years ago, I got an assignment that I drew an absolute blank on. Sparse requests, likes and DNWs, no letter. And I could think of absolutely NOTHING to write.

Usually as soon as I get my assignment I start jotting down ideas, but this one had me just sitting in front of a blank document and staring.

It didn't faze me at first, because I figured I had time, but life and other exchanges distracted me. And I was eager for a gift in one of my fandoms so I did not want to default... and then the no penalty deadline passed... and I still had nothing on the page.

Then it was two days before THE DEADLINE. Still absolutely stony blank nothing.

I panicked, and ended up dredging up a drawerfic I had written for a megafandom ages ago that I had never posted due to falling out of love with the fandom. I did a find and replace for the character names and posted it.

I used the editing time to tweak it, and found that the scenario was actually pretty IC for the requested characters, and just cut out the bits that didn't apply, renamed a few places, etc... and still had a well above the minimum fic.

The recip absolutely adored their gift, and the fic was recced in several different places. But deep down I still felt face-burning shame and was tempted for the longest time to anon the story.

This is also a fear of mine because yuletide is so huge

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*deep breath* It was me. I did it. And, I lied. I am not a participant. God, I'm so sorry. I don't know what came over me, I just couldn't help it.

I go through the collection during anon week and bookmark whatever looks interesting, and start reading after author reveals. 10/10 would recommend.

lol, but also, how would someone not be a participant by these means?

You must have been a lot better at find-and-replacing than some of the doozies I've seen over the years. /battle-hardened sometimes mod

I had a recip do that. They came back, years later, to re-read the fic and left a most contrite but appreciative comment. It was all good.

My no-show recip, OTOH... so many times I've been tempted to take their name off the fic. So many times.

Re: Your Yuletide sins

(Anonymous) 2021-10-27 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's anything wrong with that. You edited it so make it fit the request, so it doesn't matter what it was pre-edits. Before edits, a lot of fics are crap.

Also, I have about two dozen scenarios in my head that each could fit about 20 of my fandoms. (In fact, that's why they aren't getting written! I can't decide which ship to write them for.) Sometimes one story just fits a bunch of different fandom/characters/ships.

TBH, coalie, there's a lot of migratory slash fandom fic that feels like this was done. Only it wasn't pulled off as successfully.
