Yuletide Weather Forecast:

Temperatures are estimated to fluctuate between active panic and total apathy into the next weekend. It's my fault and I know it, but I got caught with a placeholder for the first time in several years of Yuletide participation, so I'm officially in default. :( I'm so embarrassed and I feel shitty about it.

Shame without penance is meaningless. You must perform a sincere act of contrition, finish the placeholder fic for your recip, and write a treat or NYR fic.

Ego te absolvo in nomine spirituum Yuletide.

It really does ease the guilt.

On the bright side, your recipient might get two gifts now if the mods sent your recipient out to pinch hit after catching your placeholder. You did that for them, coalie!

You should feel that shame. It's not okay to post a placeholder, and it sounds like this isn't the first time you've done it. If you can't post at least a bus-pass fic at deadline, stop doing Yuletide.

I love it when coal comes for people, but I wouldn't go that far. Placeholders are a part of life. If they know that they can usually replace it then I'll take them at their word.

What they should feel shame about is being too dumb to have a good placeholder. If in the last two months you couldn't write 1k of generic nonsense or PWP to put up so that a random Yuletide mod would buy it, then yeah, write your actual fic earlier and be done with it.

If you can't write a placeholder and can't get your actual fic to rough draft form by the deadline, then stop doing Yuletide.

1/2 agree. It's 2020. Placeholders are not such a great risk.

If you can write 1k of generic nonsense of PWP as a placeholder fic, then why can't you write 1k of generic nonsense or PWP as a bus-pass fic? Seriously, as the bare minimum you should be able to accomplish a bus-pass. Ramble on for 1k and throw in some appropriate character names. It's not hard.

I would give OP a 2020 "get out of shame free" card if this was the first time they'd put up a placeholder, they were honestly caught out at the last minute, and they were sure they would have been able to replace it on time. But as this seems to be their regular behavior, I'm calling them out on it.

Placeholder and buspass are being used interchangeably in this thread.

I'm guessing OP had fic with [notes], had no ending, or was clearly a fic for a different fandom (they failed to c&p the names). Neither of those are what I would consider a buspass or placeholder. It's one step up from picklefic.

I am using "bus-pass" as fic that meets the minimum requirements (1k, clearly a full story, using the requested characters, no DNWs). It's not your best work, but it passes if you're unexpectedly hit by a bus before you can edit / replace it.

Placeholder fic is something uploaded at deadline whose sole purpose is to try to fool the mods into thinking your recipient has received a story. On examination, it is clearly not a fic. Picklefic is a type of (very lazy) placeholder fic.

Bus-pass fic, while not necessarily very good, by definition wouldn't cause the mods to default you.

Therefore, all bus passes are placeholders but not all placeholders are bus passes? That's a definition I'd agree with.
