Do you ever leave additional comments on your gifts to say you're rereading them months or years later? Do you ever receive comments like this?

Is this a generally well-received thing to do, or is it weird?

I replied to everything, even the still-absent placeholder. It feels weirdly empty not to.

I do this! I don’t think anybody thought it was weird or annoying. People tend to be surprised and appreciative, IME. I’m not a super-long commenter to begin with but returning with even a short sentence like “Still love this!” can brighten the author’s day.

I really wish there were a way for people to convey this kind of thing without seeming wanky. Because as one of those stupidly long comment writers, I would GLADLY not put in the effort if it's what you prefer.

That's a perfectly good preference, but just out of curiosity, what do you dislike about long comments?

1) I recognize the URL but don't remember why. Woohoo, gorgeous jump links! Straightforward DNWs too. Their ship specific prompts are extensive and truly awesome and I am a fan of their general likes as well. The art likes are pretty good.

Would be very happy to be assigned this person and would be considering them for a treat if we shared any ships/fandoms that I especially liked.

2) The general likes seem kinda random. I enjoy that they talk at length about why they like each ship they requested. However, I'm not sure I would find the structure of their ship-specific "Likes" too terribly helpful as prompts. It's helpful for how they might want the ships to be characterized, but doesn't seem to be the sort of thing that would give me new ideas for a story.

I really like their HP request but their DNW gets too far into sharing their personal opinions and is confusing to me as someone who hasn't watched Fantastic Beasts. If I were someone who had watched and liked Fantastic Beasts I imagine I would be very put off by those DNWs.

Would be okay with being assigned this person, probably wouldn't treat unless we shared a rare ship. Would likely ODAO in either scenario.

3) Very nice structure, easy to read, short enough to be manageable but long enough to give me a nice fleshed out idea of what this person likes. Their DNWs are very straightforward. I love the structure of their fandom intros and prompts (maybe I'm biased because it's similar to how I did my letter, but w/e). I appreciate the objectively phrased prompt-specific DNWs. The OW requests are fun.

Would be very happy to be assigned this person, and would treat!

4) I love their likes list, it would be inspirational to me on its own.

They give too many opinions on their DNWs and WOW there are a lot of them (I hadn't scrolled down all the way). I would never write hurt/comfort or anything remotely related to it for this person because there are just too many minefields there in the DNWs. The 'Established noncanon "out"-ness' DNW and the explanation is just confusing and would make me wonder how the fuck they want me to write any noncanon m/m or f/f relationship they might request... do I need to put in a coming-out scene? Do they not want to see m/m or f/f background relationships? I would stress over that a lot. Besides giving a lot of unnecessary opinions on their DNWs a lot of the opinions are pretty derisively phrased. I don't care if someone DNWs something I typically like; I will be turned off if they follow that DNW with a really derisive explanation (particularly for this one... I kink on characters crying, their mean little tagline for the "sobbing breakdowns" DNW is kinda irritating). They just seem like a demanding jerk from the way they phrase their DNWs.

Their prompts and formatting are super cool but the DNWs would have already turned me off. Would write 300 words of nothing for this person if I were assigned, and would not treat.

Nope! Just another trans gay with wonderful ace queers in my life! I’ve never met an ace person like the person you describe, but I won’t discount your experience or judge you for wanting to protect yourself. I just hope you have positive encounters with amazing trans ace folk like my beloved friends, to balance out the awful.

Thanks for sharing your perspective, you sound pretty cool. Unfortunately my experience has been exactly the opposite. Additionally everyone I've ever known IRL who used to ID as ace (including myself) has eventually realized -- without input from me -- that they're not ace and are some type of LGBT, dealing with internalized issues. Several of my friends who are not and have never IDed as asexual have also had some fucked up IRL experiences with people trying to "convince" them that they're ace or "aro" (mostly my bisexual friends, which, I mean, nothing about trying to convince a bisexual person who likes to date around that they probably can't feel love seems woke to me but whatever). If I ever have different experiences I am willing to change my mind!

...fwiw, as some rando on an anon meme, I do believe asexuality is real and I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's just that specific word that has very bad connotations for me and I don't trust anyone that uses it. There are going to have to be some huge changes in the way ace-identified people treat the LGBT community before I feel differently. Assuming that you are coming at this in good faith I do appreciate you sharing your experiences, but we must be in very different communities.

Because I don't want to lie. I am not attracted to men, I have no interest in dating men. Trans women are women. I am a lesbian, I'm just a lesbian who disagrees with you.

People are beginning to associate terfs with lesbians because of people like the anon I replied to insisting that terfdom is a lesbian issue when it is very much not.

Hahahahaha, no, people are "beginning to associate terfs with lesbians" because they think that it's transphobic not to want to sleep with someone who has a penis. Lesbians did not bring this homophobia on ourselves.

Re: Chocolate Box - Letter 3T1L

(Anonymous) 2020-01-09 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I would not date a man, I am a lesbian who disagrees with you. Terfs are very quick to "no-true lesbian" anyone who doesn't fall for their bullshit, while happily throwing lesbian and bi women under the bus for the chance to hurt trans people.

Most terfs are straight and more than eager to throw lesbian and bi women under the bus when it suits them.

Erica Moen disagrees with me too, and she's hurting real lesbians by doing so.

Trans women are women. This is not hard to understand.

Okay? Why are you telling this to me, and not to the people using "terf" to mean "lesbian who doesn't want to date someone with a penis"?
