Dear author,

I guess you wrote the fic you wanted to write and I've learned to be less polite in my letters about what I don't like. But come on, did you have to tag it F/F when all the women in the story were going to get with men at the end? I feel like I was set up for disappointment. Tag f/f and m/f next time, or at least the pairings that will be in the story. Jeez.

That sounds like another for the "probably spite fic" pile. Sorry coalie, that sucks.

I read over my whole letter to see if maybe I was just unclear and they were doing their best with weird prompts, but I was even more specific than I remembered. I very clearly said I didn't want the kind of fic they wrote. I keep trying to tie myself in knots over how maybe it's just a misunderstanding, but it really feels like spitefic. I've never gotten spitefic before. I'm considering rejecting it, but I've never done that before, either. The fic itself isn't mod-worthy but it does seem just kind of shitty.

Honestly with that combo (fic that was exactly what you said you didn't want but didn't DNW in a way that would get them into trouble, tagged f/f with a surprise m/f ending) it's either spite fic or they literally read someone else's letter, with a tiny chance of a new writer who really really didn't get the gift concept and stumbled into coal. Whichever it is, it's definitely not your fault!

I've never rejected anything either but that sounds like the sort of thing I would.

Funny how there are multiple no homo spitefics every year but I've never seen a no hetero one even for recips that probably deserve it.

Oh, there was one some years ago that was great! It was for a Dortmunder Gang request that was very no homo, and hee, the author put a note on the version on AO3 (it's from a pre-AO3 Yuletide): "The recipient asked that there be no slash, which is why the running jokes about slash through it." So not exactly no hetero, but definitely a poke.

That probably has to do with the different default dispositions of slash and femslash fans versus fans who write primarily het and gen, honestly.

you mean where people request a het ship and gets slash? rare, but i've definitely seen it happen--this year even.
