No, it's not rude at all. Just comment as you usually do. I've had people leave longer comments on my gift than I do, because they do the quote + squee thing while I tend to do more 'summary of what I liked' style comments, and I don't think anyone came out of those instances unhappy. I actually feel bad when my gifts *don't* get much attention from people other than me.

A lot of authors do wait to respond until anon period is over. Then the e-mail notification contains their author name, and sometimes people will follow that link to see what else the author has written. I don't do that for all the fic I comment on, but if it left a deep impression on me, I like the reminder to go check out that particular author.
