Dear Author,
You got the first part of my request right, but then you went off in your own direction and ignored what I wrote in my prompt. I guess that is your right, but I would have preferred if you had stuck to my prompt. It's a nice fic and I wouldn't consider it coal, but it's not a diamond either.

You got the first part of my request right
wtaf, nonny? Prompts are springboards, not codes for an author to translate correctly or not.

I guess that is your right
UM. This isn't even a case of ODAO, this is someone taking your prompt and trying to write to it, and you grudgingly admit that's their "right"? How incredibly entitled are you?

You're in the wrong exchange if you want someone to write your prompts exactly, rather than being inspired to do their own take based on an optional letter. Maybe you shouldn't sign up next year.

+1 Subthread OP reminds me of "you're an asshole if you gift ODAO treats"-anon who's been wanking it up and down Yuletide threads on FFA and coal.

I don't think that's a minority opinion.

That's not one Anon and also not this situation.

My take is that you can have this feeling...but your prompts better be detailed. Don’t just prompt “What if Tony and Steve got married” and then get mad when the fic doesn’t include your “and obviously the end up on a planet with nobody else and become codependant and aren’t able to mesh with the world when they return to 616”. I will write that specific ass fic if you TELL ME but don’t be mad that an open ended prompt got a fic that went in the open direction you pointed at.

If your prompt did say what you wanted then it is an ODAO issue and yeah, that is a risk of exchanges over commissioned fic.

I would hate getting a prompt that detailed, I'd feel stifled and scream "why don't YOU write the fic then" and probably going ODAO for the ending.

+1. And yes, prompts are absolutely a jumping-off point. Exchanges aren't commissions.

AYRT

Which is your right! But anyone can give whatever kinds of prompts they want. My issue is if OP is mad for the author missing the mark when they didn’t even tell them there was a target to aim for.

That's definitely not what the OP did, they said "and ignored what I wrote in my prompt. I guess that is your right, but I would have preferred if you had stuck to my prompt". Did you read up or jump in flat view?

I’m saying that it depends for me if they actually had a prompt that said what the ending should be. Most of the time vague wank like this happens, it turns out the recip never actually said anything (wrong person bottoms wank) and had a secret headcanon they kept to themselves yet punish the author for not knowing.

With that kind of attitude, it's no wonder so many Yuletide fics suck so much this year.

Re: Dear Author/Dear Recip

(Anonymous) 2019-12-25 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That attitude is what makes Yuletide fits good tbh. Your shitty detailed headcanon that you want an exact copy of that you should just write your own damn self is why some fics suck.

Yuletide is a gift exchange not a "throw some random pile of shit that you felt like writing at your recip and expect them to be grateful" fest.

Yuletide is a gift exchange not a kink meme.

ncyrt but isn't half of what the recip requested good enough? The author obviously tried and included parts that the recip liked! We don't know how detailed their prompts were, but there's always the chance they just weren't able to write the latter part for XYZ reason.

IMO, effort is good enough. ID mismatches are all too easy.

It's not commissioning a fic. If you have a prompt so detailed that not getting every single aspect will ruin it for you, then write it yourself or pay someone.

Wow, sorry you got so much shit over what seems like a pretty minor vent. You didn't leave information about your prompt here, but in good faith I'd assume it was a reasonable two-parter like 'They meet up on Planet X for a mission and then spend the rest of their downtime there together in a fluffy way.' And you were upfront about admitting that they didn't break any Yuletide rules, you just weren't happy.

I hope you got a treat as well to make it sting a bit less, but you have at least one coalie's sympathies.
