Coalie was beginning to get very tired of waiting for their gift to be posted, and of having nothing to shake: once or twice they had peeped into the tags of the fic their dentist had been gifted, but it had no characters or freeforms on it, "and what is the use of a fic," thought Coalie, "without ships or tags?"

The blank AO3 kind of screams sock or total newb (probably sock), but if their letter is enthusiastic and they have a presence somewhere, maybe not.

Why do you think they defaulted? You can't know that from it being blank. Mystery works don't show up anymore.

No letter, only a fairly short signup.

They don't have a gift and they didn't go to pinch hit so I'm assuming. I guess their writer might have an extension though.

I may try and write it anyway if I have time, even if they never end up reading it someone else might like it.

Ah, didn't think about them not showing on the pinch hit list. That's evidence toward a default for sure, except in the case of an extension or a behind-the-scenes pinch hit.

I don't know how they do it now, but I know they used to give some pinch hits out before they went to the list at large. During elynross days, at least.
