Coalie in Post-DeadlineLand

Coalie was beginning to get very tired of waiting for their gift to be posted, and of having nothing to shake: once or twice they had peeped into the tags of the fic their dentist had been gifted, but it had no characters or freeforms on it, "and what is the use of a fic," thought Coalie, "without ships or tags?"

My first Yuletide, one of my requests was for a fandom in which the two lead characters are seen by a lot of the fandom as having been intimate. It's clear they love each other, but some see that platonically, like brothers. I get that, especially given the era.

I made it clear in my sign-up I saw them as more than that, but I understood that my writer might not ship them, and gave all my likes and suggestions for either scenario.

I got gen, but it was the best most amazing gen (and got as close to shipping them as a gen story could). The writer gave me everything I wanted, really, and it was beautifully written. I reread it at least a couple times a year. This was before AO3, so I couldn't shake anything. I think I'd have been disappointed at first if I could have seen tags. But my god, it was fantastic.
