Coalie in Post-DeadlineLand
Coalie was beginning to get very tired of waiting for their gift to be posted, and of having nothing to shake: once or twice they had peeped into the tags of the fic their dentist had been gifted, but it had no characters or freeforms on it, "and what is the use of a fic," thought Coalie, "without ships or tags?" (Anonymous) 2019-12-18 10:21 am (UTC)(link)I think also that if you request a crossover, you have to be prepared for it to skew more to second canon than the first, just because of how it shakes out. If they just wanted the trope from second canon, they would just say the trope, not ask for a crossover.
Re: Ask Coal
(Anonymous) 2019-12-18 10:52 am (UTC)(link)It’s still in the world of the first, requested canon (and second canon is very Yuletide eligible, too), the second canon is serving almost as a villain of the week type role. There’s already a “mechanism” in canon for incorporating other fictional universes. So I wouldn’t say it’s more about second canon, but that second canon knowledge adds a lot to the fic.
I don’t know enough about comics to make this too specific, but imagine if you wrote a Spider-Verse Doc Oc/Aunt May fic where Natasha Romanoff-from-the-comics shows up and they have an adventure. I’m a tiny bit worried the arc of the plot is too dependent on knowing Natasha’s comics backstory when maybe they’ve just seen her show up in an Avenger’s movie?
This doesn’t apply for Natasha, but would it be disappointing if you’ve osmosed a particular character is a badass from pop culture but if you go back to the source, they’re kinda dweeby, and I wrote more of the dweeb than the badass?
I don’t know why I’m overcome with anxiety about this right now.
