I think you’re onto something with this, even outside a Yuletide context. My old canons have tons of really excellent fic, but fandom activity is crickets - meanwhile my beloved recent TV canon has a million fans, tons of fic posted daily, and as far as I can tell 99% of it is hot garbage. Statistically this doesn’t make any sense!
