I've found that this doesn't usually lead to much useful info and I've given up on it.

I've discovered that my recipient has almost opposite tastes to me when we share ships based on her bookmarks and is spotty at commenting on gifts! I only looked at her AO3 though. Her letter is doable, so I'm just going to write what I want and hope the other 5 people in the fandom like whatever I come up with.

stupid neurosis time: their bookmarks and their writing are utterly unlike my style of writing. This stresses me.

I have no helpful advice bc same but as other coalies have talked about, what people bookmark and write isn't always indicative of their broader tastes!

I never bother. If they tell me what they want in prompts and/or a letter, I believe them. If they don't, I write what I would want to read in that fandom.
