In neither case would I think it was odd that the letter-writer *didn't* include a more like that, but I wouldn't take it as am accusation if they did. With Lovecraft especially, there's a strong tradition of confronting/interrogating his racism so it's not unthinkable either that an author might decide to write Critical Race Lovecraft or that a recipient would want to make it clear that they don't want that.
