It happens on Discord now which it seems like the place where they’re finding these PHs.

I would understand if they were flocked posts but the pageantry of sharing with the general public is part of what makes it so cringe. I understand that you appreciate it but the pretentiousness of assuming anyone cares about what research you did for a fanfiction (and in some cases what isn’t even in the final product) is getting high on your own supply. Everything this person said, even mentioning it was a scrambled PH, is in line with those commentary posts. This is the AO3 fandom version of that, where your a/n functions as the journal post you may once have made since they are literally titled authors notes and that’s what these kind of mea culpas are.

Obviously I have never liked them and never will, but if you do, this is what they’ll look like with tumblr dead and dw/lj never having been a home for these people.

they think its cute or funny or something. just search his name here and you’ll see coalies gleefully saying they plan to email the mods and let them know they’ll be his author or recip.

okay bigot oppa is an amazing phrase and I'm stealing that but highkey sideeying the rest of this.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'd personally rather get odao from someone who knows the fandom over fic someone wrote from a wikipedia article to one of my prompts/likes

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't think they run here to complain, because anyone who's spent time on coal has become far too anxious and neurotic to be able to blithely do that.

But like, a significant proportion of signups have no optional details, and about a third of them don't bother with a letter and/or have only DNWs listed. There's still a fair contingent of people every yuletide who *aren't* neurotic coalies and just want to do a fun small fandom exchange that matches on fandoms and characters.

And a lot of people who aren't neurotic and aren't neck-deep in exchange culture would assume that a recip would rather get 5000 words of interesting, lovingly-written fic about the things they actually matched on than get 1000 grudgingly written words for a prompt they probably don't care that much about, *or* than be defaulted on. After all if you cared that much about getting your exact prompt, why would you sign up for an exchange that is explicitly odao?

I don't know why "this is my hobby process" is particularly cringe when it comes to fanfiction. Do you also find people talking about woodworking projects or learning to edit better videos to be unbearably embarrassing? It's a thing people had fun doing, they maybe learned something in the process, they challenged themselves and felt good about it, and they want to capture that.

can’t decide if that means you should say you’re happy with anything or if you should say you prioritize canon compliance over everything else

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
People say shit like that all the time, but I would bet you $50 no one ever has.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
idk there are some weirdos out there who i bet would

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I bet those are sock accounts

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
i cba to check, what do the comments on his last few gifts look like (and does it seem like those recips were double assigned)? his prose is really bad even without the weirdness and nobody comes here to complain/he slides under the radar since the mods started coaching him. to me that points to knowing parties taking a hit especially given people say they are knowing parties who are willing to take a hit.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
oh absolutely but we haven’t gotten ai mastered yet, so there are still humans behind that account.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
genuine question: why haven't the mods banned him after like the 2nd/3rd weird ass fic?

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
neither? I just don't see the point of reading fic from someone who doesn't even know the source material

Dude, "posting to your dreamwidth or tumblr" is not "the pageantry of sharing it with the general public". Posting about their writing process is... what people do on dreamwidth? Do you whine about how pretentiously attention-seeking people are for posting on their dreamwidth that they were late to work because the dog peed in their shoe? And yeah they've done that in author notes too, since the freakin' mailing list days (they probably did it in letterzines.)

I mean with the yuletide ones anyway it generally reads like "I couldn't post about my writing process while it was in progress like I usually do because anon, so I will barf it all out in one go", so they tend to be more elaborate because it's two months of flailing saved up? But they're not, like, doing it at you, I promise.

+1
i'd rather just not get a gift than get very obvious kittyfic

Those would be tutorial videos, which are fine. If you think those posts are tutorials then that explains a lot and makes them even more cringey for me. I see them as an example of a work not standing on its own and/or the author needing to give a commentary because they need to have their face out there, which is deeply embarrassing to me. I love DVD commentaries but I know that all the best directors have to be dragged into the booth because actual good directors with things to say want their work to do the talking to them. Someone that produces their own DVD commentary track not only has nothing useful to add, they’re going to be embarrassing as hell in doing it. It’s one thing to privately tell your friends, it’s another to make it an open letter and then go to the main community and link as if everyone had been waiting for it to drop.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well ... I have been waiting for it to drop. Because I like reading them. So they're not wrong.

Re: Trick or Treat

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Having it for their friends or themselves is fine/one thing, like I said. It’s the making it public (in the notes, by linking to it in the main Yuletide comm or on Discord, etc) that is deeply pathetic to me.

Re: Trick or Treat

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Because you think they're making wildly inaccurate assumptions about how interesting it is for others?

I get that you don't find it interesting at all, but other people do. They aren't necessarily failing to read the room.

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
it's yuletide. nothing gets you banned, not even the most obvious spitefic.

Re: Trick or Treat

(Anonymous) 2021-11-01 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ok.

People attended Tumblrcon and got into the ballpit. People fell for Fyre Fest. The existence of an audience for someone’s scam or ego trip doesn’t make make it less pathetic or less unneeded.

So you’re fine with this a/n.
